Mendota is a small but quite pleasant and peaceful town in Fresno County, in the state of California, in the United States of America.  This town represents the epitome of American small town life.  The town is a poor one, getting most of its income from a dying out agricultural system.  The population was 11,014 at the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau. The State Routes 180 and 33 run through the agricultural city, so that brings some travelers through the city and gives it some business. Mendota is located about 8.5 miles south-southeast of the bigger town of Firebaugh, and it rests at an elevation of 174 feet.

Recent years have brought hard times on for Mendota.  The city recently had a prison built there, which brought on about five-hundred jobs, but the city has lost thousands of jobs in a receding agricultural industry.  The city suffers from chronic unemployment averaging 20% as a result of this. In the year of 2009, a drought combined with a recession caused unemployment to surge above 40% and to stay above forty percent until 2012 when the prison was completed.  In fact, the unemployment was quoted at 45% in May 2011.  Hard times have been a true manifestation in Mendota.  Thankfully, there have been some signs that these issues will fall by the wayside in the future, but it is hard to say at this time.

Drug and Alcohol Addiction Sets In

When any town or urban area of any kind (even rural areas), gets struck with hard times economically and financially the result is increased crime, increased violence, increased social problems, and especially increased drug and alcohol abuse.  This has been the case for a few years now in Mendota.  The general thought and the general consensus is that these issues and problems will go down eventually, but no one really knows when that will happen or what will have to be done to bring those types of changes about.

For now, even though Mendota is a small town, roughly one out of three of the local residents has been classified with a legitimate addiction problem, whether it is with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, or marijuana.  This has lowered the overall quality of living here and has brought everyone else who is not addicted down as well and made them suffer.

To connect the dots, in 2013, 22.7 million Americans needed treatment for a substance use disorder of one kind or another nationwide.  Almost 9% of the population over the age of 12 to be exact is what that breaks down too.  The problem in Mendota is more than doubly as concentrated as it is in the nation as a whole. Only about 2.5 million nationwide received such treatment at a specialty facility though.  It is estimated that more than 41% of treatment admissions that year were for alcohol abuse, 20 % of admissions were for opiate addiction treatment, and 17% were for the treatment of marijuana abuse too.

Erecting Rehabilitation in Mendota to Counter Addiction Problems

For too long Mendota has suffered horrifically with drug and alcohol abuse and addiction in general.  This has been quite the problem for the city indeed.  Many would think, “Mendota?  How is that possible?  It’s hardly more than a small town!”  The truth is though, Mendota is just one of many small, California towns that has sadly fallen under the horrible cloak of drug and alcohol addiction and substance abuse in general.  True enough, this is now a very serious thing in this state and it has been for some time too.

Drug and alcohol abuse and addiction in general has been tackling the West coast like never before.  A lot of what has been occurring is that drugs have been getting traffic out of the bigger cities and into the smaller ones.  Literally the problem has been moving steadily outwards from bigger cities and into smaller cities, making for a deadly and quite serious problem in this city and the general surroundings and in a lot of other small cities like it.

What does a city actually do about a problem like this?  The best thing that anyone can do is work with a rehabilitation center to ensure that anyone who is addicted in Mendota gets into and through an inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment center, detox facility, rehab program, and recovery organization.  This is obviously the best of the best when it comes to solutions, and it has been for some time now.  With proper rehab, anyone who is addicted to anything can actually win out against the horrible crisis that is addiction.  Finally, Mendota can once again know freedom and sobriety from addiction.  The key is in the rehabilitation centers themselves and in the ability of those who love and care about the locals who are addicted in getting the addicts into and through these rehabs.  With that being done, the problem will cease to be such a huge issue and the city can once again focus on bouncing back from their economic struggles.
