About the City of Whittier: The Area in Review and in Summary
Whittier is a well-known and popular city in Southern California, in the United States of America. The city had a population of 85,331 at the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau, up from 83,680 as of the 2000 census. The city easily encompasses 14.7 square miles in total area. Like the nearby city of Montebello, the city constitutes part of the Gateway Cities because of its geographical positioning. Whittier was officially incorporated in February 1898 and became a charter city in the year 1955. The city is named for the poet John Greenleaf Whittier and is home to the infamous Whittier College.
As for the city’s history, after World War II Whittier grew rapidly and the sub-dividing of orange groves began, driven by housing shortages in southern California at that time period. In 1955 the new Civic Center complex was completed which still stands today and the City Council met in new chambers for the first time on March 8, 1955. The city continued to grow as the City annexed portions of Whittier Boulevard and East Whittier into itself. The 1961 annexation added over 28,000 people to the population, bringing the total to about 67,000 at that time. All in all, the city has grown impressively since World War II, and the economy there has been stable and solid.
Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse: A New and Cruel Terror for the Residents of Whittier
Sadly, it is often the most stable, balanced, and successful cities, towns, and urban areas that are targeted the most for drug addiction, substance abuse, and drug trafficking. This hasn’t always been the case, as prior to the turn of the century most drug dealers and drug criminals tended to stay in poverty class and lower class urban areas, cities, and towns. This is not the case anymore. Especially since the economic crisis of 2008, much of the drug trade in the United States has shifted to middle class and upper middle class areas and towns. True enough, in 2010 it was reported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, (NIDA), that a middle class or upper middle class American was quite literally just as likely to get hooked on drugs, as a lower class or poverty class American.
This has been the lot of life in the city of Whittier. Drugs have filtered into this city in the last ten years in a pretty big way, and now many of the populace of the city is addicted to such substances. Particularly amongst the young adult population of Whittier, the situation has been pretty extreme to say the least. If something isn’t done soon about it, then its very likely that the city will experience a full on addiction crisis and epidemic.
