Twentynine Palms is a unique city that was named for the palm trees found there in the year of 1852 by Col. Henry Washington while doing some surveying of the San Bernardino area. A post office was established in the year of 1927, and the area began to grown population from there on out and eventually established into a town of its own.
Nearby to the city is a small Indian reservation belonging to the Twentynine Palms Band of Mission Indians. The Indian culture and lifestyle play a big role in the city too, as the reservation and the city are so close to each other. Perhaps most infamous about the city, The Oasis of Mara, is a park that is maintained by the United States National Park Service, is visited by about 140,000 people every year, and per Indian legend, is the location of the original 29 palm trees planted by the Serrano Indians.
The City of Twentynine Palms, California, in the southern sector of the Mojave Desert, is the home of Joshua Tree National Park headquarters and proud host of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, the world's largest Marine Corps training base. Known state-wide for its clear skies, brilliant star-filled nights, desert and mountain vistas, wide open spaces, and world-class murals and public art alike, the city offers a haven for artists and nature lovers, a unique getaway destination for visitors too, a scenic location for photography and filming that has been used for this reason for decades, and a supportive climate for small businesses, a family-friendly lifestyle for residents, and a healthy environment for retirees too. At the small city has a lot going for it, and the population has soared since the turn of the century as a result of that fact.
As for its history, the city of Twentynine Palms was initially developed as a desert homesteading community in the 1920s. Later on, the City of Twentynine Palms was incorporated on November 23, 1987. Situated as it is in the Morongo Basin area of San Bernardino County, about 140 miles east of Los Angeles and 50 miles northeast of Palm Springs, the city encompasses 58 square miles and has a population of approximately 30,000 residents all in all.
Drug and Alcohol Abuse: A Big Problem for Cities and Towns Across California
Sadly, drug and alcohol abuse and addiction really has begun to take its toll on the locals and the residents of the city of Twentynine Palms. To make matters even worse, this is not only a problem for Twentynine Palms, but it is also a huge issue for the nation as a whole. California has it bad, but so do other states all across the nation. For some insight into just how bad drug and alcohol abuse and addiction has gotten in the country, some facts and statistics have been included below:
• Drug and alcohol addiction and abuse and consumption in general has spiraled out of control in the United States since the turn of the century. A pretty good and reliable way to estimate the impact of substance abuse in the nation is to count how many Americans seek treatment for addiction every year at a certified and reliable rehabilitation center or program.
• On this point, The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, (SAMHSA), reported that well over and no less than twenty-three million Americans sought out professional drug and alcohol rehabilitation in the year of 2009 alone. This number represents almost a full ten percent of the U.S. population that is over the age of twelve years old.
Rehabilitation Sought as the Solution to the Nation’s Drug Problem
Drug and alcohol addiction and substance abuse in general has made big changes in and around Twentynine Palms and has done so for some time now. This is a city that has made a name for itself for drug and alcohol addiction problems. True enough, this city has suffered time and time again, and if something is not done soon about it, then this issue really could begin to take over in this area.
Though Twentynine Palms is not a big city, it does have a pretty big drug problem to say the least. The issue simply gets worse and worse and worse. There are a few reasons for this like:
Twentynine Palms just so happens to lie on some major lines of travel for drug trafficking lines. It is an outlying city in this state, and as the bigger cities are almost always avoided by major drug cartels and organizations as they are far better protected by the Drug Enforcement Agency, (DEA), and other law enforcement agencies, outlying cities like this one tend to get hit the hardest by drug trafficking instead.
The key answer to beating drug and alcohol addiction in and around Twentynine Palms lies in getting all those who are addicted here into and through inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment centers, detox facilities, rehab programs, and recovery organizations. In this way, those who are addicted are actually able to get their lives back. In this way, little by little the city and the surrounding areas in general will be able to recover from the micro-epidemic of drug and alcohol addiction that was occurring there at that time.
