Shasta Lake is a reservoir city in Shasta County, in the state of California, in the United States of America. It is within the Whiskeytown–Shasta–Trinity National Recreation Area, and the general area is also popularly known as "Lake Shasta".
Shasta Lake is best recognized by the nearby Shasta Dam, the ninth tallest dam in the entire United States. Known as the infamous keystone of the Central Valley Project, the outflow of Shasta Dam provides electricity and irrigation water for a lot of homes, businesses, and electrical companies. It also provides invaluable Sacramento River flood control below the dam for the Sacramento Valley as well.
Shasta Lake is a very predominantly family oriented and tourism oriented town and city. The city gains most of its revenue from tourism and small businesses and retail. The lake is also a big money maker for the city too.
Shasta Lake hosted the first "Boardstock" event in the year of 1996, which continued there annually through 1999, after which the annual event moved to Clear Lake, California, 170 miles southwest of Shasta Lake. Boardstock drew many pro wakeboard riders from around the world, with an average attendance of 15,000 people. The event lasted for 3 days each year with several wakeboard contests being performed. Though the event no longer takes place in Shasta Lake, many other events have now become popular here, all thanks to the recognition that the Boardstock event brought to the previously quiet, mostly unrecognized town.
Substance Abuse Rears its Ugly Head in Shasta Lake
Sadly, Shasta Lake was not meant to be spared from the drug and alcohol abuse and addiction problems that have been sweeping across the small towns and small cities of rural California. This is a change that has been occurring here in California for years now. Sadly, drug and alcohol abuse and addiction has been an inescapable crisis the likes of which the nation has never seen before. Specifically in California, the problem really has been causing the most damage in the state’s small cities, small towns, rural areas, suburbs, bedroom communities, and farming communities.
What can honestly be done when such a bad drug addiction problem hits a small city that is totally unprepared for it? That has been part and parcel what has made this issue so bad in Shasta Lake. Big cities at least know how to deal with major drug problems. Small cities and towns do not. It doesn’t take many addicts to cause a lot of turmoil in small city that is unprepared to deal with drug abuse, and Shasta Lake has dozens of drug addicts now. In light of these facts things have started to look pretty grim here indeed.
The problem of substance abuse sadly touches many areas of different public policy, from border security to the health system and criminal justice too. The rise may have been spurred partially by an increase in supply, (for example the amount of heroin seized at the border with Mexico quadrupled by 2013 from the 2000s, making the drug cheaper in the U.S. and more pure too). Furthermore, during 2008-2011, there were about 1.1 million emergency department visits for drug poisoning each and every year, or 35.4 visits per 10,000 people all in all.
Utilizing Rehabilitation in Shasta Lake
A crisis has stuck Shasta Lake and has made some pretty big problems there. This is an area that simply gets hurt more and more thanks to addiction issues. Without a doubt, substance abuse is a problem for small town California on a level that has never been quite as bad as this.
How did this come about though? Unfortunately, the main reason why this issue came about was because of the economic crisis of 2008. When that happened, the entire nation suffered. This included those who generally speaking abused drugs in big cities. When such individuals could not afford drugs anymore the solution for big city drug dealers was to extend their efforts out into small towns, rural towns, farming communities, suburban areas, and bedroom communities.
This has a really bad effect on Shasta Lake and on cities like Shasta Lake because these areas had never had to deal with drug addiction and substance abuse problems before. What this meant was that such areas like Shasta Lake were completely unprepared for tackling problems like these. The sudden presence of serious drug addiction in small towns like Shasta Lake caught locals by surprise and no one really knew what to do about these issues for a while.
The answer to tackling this crisis and to getting rid of it once and for all is with inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment centers, detox facilities, rehab programs, and recovery organizations. These are the ones that will do the best and get the most done for those who are addicted. Only inpatient rehab is truly effective for beating addiction because it is involved enough to really help people who suffer with addiction problems. Once the residents of Shasta Lake get all who are addicted into and through such programs this city will finally be able to experience a life that is totally free from addiction for themselves and for their loved ones.
