Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse: a Major Issue for Green Bay and Local Areas
Drug addiction and substance abuse has swept across the nation in ways and means that have never been seen before. Since the turn of the century, drug addiction in the nation as a whole has spiraled out of control to a point where drug addiction is more prevalent in the United States and more damaging now than it has ever been since the founding of the nation.
Wisconsin has always had a pretty serious alcohol problem, being that it is the number one state in the entire country for alcohol abuse and addiction and overdose deaths. Now however, drug addiction is also becoming a major issue in this state and in the city of Green Bay itself. Without a doubt, the issue is a severe one. Heroin, cocaine, prescription drugs, and meth have all been making much more common and serious appearances in Green Bay and all across Eastern Wisconsin than they ever did before. It has been speculated that this is the result of the resurgence of the economy in these areas following the economic recession of 2008, but many other factors are likely to be playing a part in it as well. Regardless of the cause of the addiction crisis, if something is not done soon then Green Bay may be well on its way to experiencing a full on addiction epidemic.
Drug and Alcohol Abuse Facts and Statistics
Since the entire nation as a whole began to experience such severe addiction issues, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, (NSDUH), began to survey, research, tabulate, study, and analyze the drug problem in various key areas that seemed to have the biggest problems. Green Bay as a city and Wisconsin as a state was selected as some of the areas that needed to be examined. Some of the findings of these studies are included below to provide the reader with context:
• The number of individuals who died in Wisconsin from drug abuse is very high when it is compared to other causes of death. For example, the number of 639 drug overdose deaths is compared to the number of persons in Wisconsin who died from motor vehicle accidents, (809), and firearms, (a mere 488), in the same year.
• Wisconsin drug-induced deaths equate to 11.4 per 100,000 population.
• While marijuana is the most commonly cited drug among primary drug treatment admissions in
Wisconsin, cocaine is a close runner up and has been growing year after year in popularity in Wisconsin.
• The state of Wisconsin comes in second for the number of women who continue to drink during pregnancy.
• The Wisconsin Department of Transportation cites the state as having the highest rate of drunken driving in the nation. In 2012 there were more than 33,000 convictions for drunken driving offenses throughout the state.
Rehabilitation Sought as a Solution for Addiction in Green Bay
Without a doubt, a drug or alcohol is a shattering, heartbreaking affliction to have. It does not have to mean the end of the line for anyone though, and any individual no matter how sorely addicted can find true happiness and relief with the help of an inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment center, detox facility, and rehabilitation program.
Only inpatient rehab centers can truly and completely help those addicted to drugs and alcohol in Green Bay, because only inpatient rehab programs possess the necessary facilities, staff, technologies, methodologies, length of time, safety, and security necessary to obtain a full-on recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Unfortunately, other approaches to kicking a drug addiction like outpatient counseling or group meetings will not cut it for Green Bay residents, not when heroin, opiate drugs, and alcohol abuse is so prevalent in this relatively isolated city.
Green Bay Offers an Excellent Environment for Recovered Addicts
Green Bay, while it suffers with addiction issues within the city, can also be a great place to go clean and get rid of an addiction. Without a doubt, this city possesses much more than meets the eye at first, and the city has excellent aftercare options for recovered addicts as well as employment options. The city also offers nice hotels, fine dining, and plenty of entertainment of the family members and loved ones of addicts who desire to visit their addicted loved ones while they are going throughout treatment in Green Bay. Even though the city struggles with addiction, if the residents of the city all go through rehab, the city itself will improve exponentially.
