Wheeling Drug Rehabilitation

Wheeling is a well-known and historically important city in both Marshall and Ohio counties in the U.S. state of West Virginia.  Located as it is almost entirely in Ohio County, (of which it is the county seat), the city of Wheeling lies along the Ohio River in the foothills of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains.  Wheeling is well known for being the principal city of the Wheeling Metropolitan Statistical Area.  As of the 2010 census done by the United States Census Bureau, the Wheeling, WV MSA had a population of 147,950, and the city itself had a population of 28,486.

As for its history, Wheeling was actually originally a settlement in the British colony of Virginia and later a very, very important city in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Wheeling was in fact the first state capital of West Virginia.   Thanks to its location along major transportation routes and its strong population of young, able bodied workers, Wheeling became a manufacturing center in the late nineteenth century.  It helped that the city rested on the Ohio River, National Road, and the B&O Railroad.

As a result of having experienced the closing of factories and the very substantial population loss following World War II, Wheeling’s major industries now include healthcare, education, law and legal services, entertainment and tourism, and energy as well.

Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse Making a Name for Itself in Wheeling

Drug addiction and substance abuse has always been a critical issue in Wheeling and all across the state of West Virginia, but now the problem is at a whole new level.  In fact, addiction has never been as serious as it is now in Wheeling, and all across the state, and if something is not done soon then the problem will only get much, much worse.

Addiction Statistics: What is Really Occurring in Wheeling and All Across the State

To better understand the issue in Wheeling and all across the state of West Virginia, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, (SAMHSA), and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC), worked together to find out as much as they could about the drug problem in this city and in this state.  The goal here was to understand the problem as much as possible so that preventative plans and potential solutions could be arrived at.  Listed below are just a few of the findings that were discovered:

• As a very sad but very, very direct consequence of drug use, 405 persons died in West Virginia in 2007. This unfortunately means that more residents of West Virginia died of drug overdoses in West Virginia than any other cause of preventable death except for car accidents.  For example, the number above is compared to the number of persons in West Virginia who died from motor vehicle accidents (429) and firearms (only 267) in the same year.

• Throughout the state, West Virginia drug-induced deaths number an alarming 22.4 per 100,000 population.  This greatly exceeds the national rate of only 12.7 per 100,000.

• Most states have marijuana, as their most commonly and frequently used drug.  This is not the case in West Virginia.  In fact, according to studies, opiate-based drugs, (including prescription
drugs), are the most commonly cited drugs among primary drug treatment admissions in the state when individuals in the state come to inpatient rehab centers for treatment and addiction assessment and resolvement.

Rehabilitation Sought as a Solution for Addiction in Wheeling

The best chance for anyone in Wheeling or all across the state of West Virginia who is addicted to drugs or alcohol lies in a course through an inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment center, detox facility, and rehabilitation program.  Only centers like these offer the services necessary to really be able to fight and win against addiction once and for all.

At an inpatient rehab a Wheeling drug or alcohol addict will have access to all of the detoxification services that he or she might need to break the physical and chemical dependence and addiction that he or she has with drugs and alcohol.  Also at such a center, a Wheeling addict will be able to access a wide multitude of different types of counseling and therapy that he or she can then use to assist himself or herself in fighting against and winning against addiction, once and for all.

Wheeling, An Opportune Place to Fight and Win Against Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Wheeling has many things about it that make it an ideal city for fighting and winning against addiction.  There is much to do in the city for the recovering addict, or for his or her family members or loved ones who might want to visit Wheeling while their loved one is in treatment.  For example, the city if well known for featuring several municipal parks including Oglebay Resort & Conference Center and Wheeling Park.  Ohio County has six golf courses, including designs by renowned golfer Arnold Palmer and architect Robert Trent Jones.

The Wheeling Suspension Bridge, which was once the longest suspension bridge in the world, connects downtown Wheeling to Wheeling Island, which is also a popular tourist destination.  Without a doubt, though addiction runs rampant here, this is a city where it is very simple to beat a drug or alcohol habit.
