Spokane Drug Rehabilitation

Spokane is a well-known and populous city in the state of Washington, in the northwestern United States.  This city is the seat of Spokane County.  Spokane is conveniently located on the Spokane River west of the Rocky Mountain foothills in eastern Washington, only 92 miles south of the Canadian border, a mere 20 miles from the Washington–Idaho border.  According to the 2010 census done by the United States Census Bureau, Spokane had a population of 208,916, making it the second largest city in Washington and the 102nd largest city in all of the United States.

As for its history, the first humans to live in the area, the “Spokane People”, arrived between 13,000 and 8,000 years ago, living off of the plentiful game.  Known as the birthplace of Father’s Day, Spokane is officially nicknamed the “Lilac City”.  A famous colonist, David Thompson, initially explored the area with the westward expansion and establishment of the North West Company’s Spokane House in 1810.

This trading post was actually the first long-term European settlement in Washington. Completion of the Northern Pacific Railway in 1881 brought many settlers to the Spokane area, and that same year it was officially incorporated as a city with the initial name of, “Spokane Falls”.  The local economy depended on mining, timber, and agriculture until the 1980s.  Spokane hosted the first environmentally themed World’s Fair at Expo ’74.

Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse in this City

Drug addiction and substance abuse is at an all-time high in the city of Spokane.  Like many other cities in the state of Washington, and like many other cities in the entire Pacific Northwest for that matter, drug addiction and substance abuse in general has been increasing at a rather dangerous rate since the turn of the century.

For Spokane, the issue has risen primarily in the use and abuse of marijuana, prescription drugs, and meth.  These three drugs have stepped in and taken over control of thousands of the residents of Spokane, effectively making the city far more addicted in general than ever before.  If something is not done soon, the city could very well be facing a full blown addiction epidemic.

Statistics on the Issue in Spokane

There was done recently a massive study, set of surveys, and research project into the drug addiction and substance abuse issue in general in the state of Washington.  This project, performed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, (SAMHSA), the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, (NSDUH), and the state of Washington Department of Health, was done to try and capture an idea of just how extensive and involved the drug problem was in Spokane.  The results were dismal to say the least.

Listed below are just a few of these findings to provide the reader with context into just how severe of an issue this is today:

• In the years of 2007 and 2008, Washington was one of the top ten states for rates in several drug-use categories among persons of the age of twelve and older including but not limited to: past-month illicit drug use in general, past-month marijuana use amongst residents, and past-year non-medical use of prescription pain reliever drugs.

• Approximately a full ten percent of Washington residents reported past-month use of illicit drugs to some degree or another.  The national average for drug abuse was only eight percent.

• Washington’s rate of drug abuse in the last several years has been one of the top ten highest amongst all of the states.

Rehabilitation Sought as a Cure for Addiction in Spokane

For Spokane residents who are addicted to drugs and alcohol the best way to fight such an addiction habit is through an inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and recovery treatment program and center.  Only inpatient rehab programs offer the extensive services that are needed to fight addiction successfully, and only inpatient rehabs can give an addict a good chance at achieving a permanent recovery.

Inpatient rehab centers offer to addicted Spokane residents the detox facilities, counseling methods, rehabilitative constructions, coping strategies, relapse prevention skills, and electives necessary to fight addiction properly.  It is not currently being recommended for any and all addicted Spokane residents to seek out inpatient rehabilitation as soon as is possible.
