Virginia Beach Drug Rehabilitation

Virginia Beach is a very popular and immensely well-known and independent city located in the U.S. state of Virginia.  As of the most recent 2010 census, the population was 437,994 in the city.  In 2013, the population was estimated by the United States Census Bureau to have grown to about 448,479. residents.  Although mostly suburban in character, it is the most populous city in the entire state of Virginia, having grown larger than the more urban neighboring city of Norfolk.  Virginia Beach is also the 39th most populous city in the entire United States.

As for its geographical location, the city is located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.  Virginia Beach is included in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. This area, known as “America’s First Region”, also includes the independent cities of Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Suffolk, as well as other smaller cities, counties, and towns of Hampton Roads and other important geographical areas and urban dwellings.

Virginia Beach is most well known as a popular and much desired resort city with miles of beaches and hundreds of hotels, motels, and restaurants along its expansive oceanfront.  Every year the city hosts the East Coast Surfing Championships as well as the North American Sand Soccer Championship, a beach soccer tournament.  The city itself is also home to several state parks, several long-protected beach areas, three military bases, a number of large corporations, two universities, international headquarters for many companies, and it is also the site of the television broadcast studios for Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN).  The city goes on to be the home Edgar Cayce’s Association for Research and Enlightenment, and numerous historic sites.

As for the history of this famous city, near the point where the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean meet, Cape Henry was the site of the first landing of the English colonists, who eventually settled in Jamestown, on April 26, 1607.

To further add to its fame, the city of Virginia Beach is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as having the longest pleasure beach in the world.  It is located at the southern end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, also the longest bridge-tunnel complex in the world.

Addiction in the City

Like many other towns along the eastern seaboard, Virginia Beach has recently begun to struggle with a major upsurge in drug addiction, specifically heroin and opiate pain medication addiction.  Heroin has trickled its way up from Mexico in recent years, and is now making serious trouble in Virginia Beach.  Since opiate pain medications have basically the same chemical composition as heroin, these drugs are also now being abused because individuals substitute them for heroin when they cannot get heroin.

Virginia Beach is no stranger to addiction, but it is a stranger to addiction of this severity and magnitude.  If something is not done soon for this city, it is feared that the city itself will be facing an addiction crisis that borders on a full scale health epidemic.

Statistics on the Problem:  Real and Local Facts on What is Occurring in Virginia Beach

To better understand the drug problem in this city, one must look to the recorded facts and statistics.  The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, (SAMHSA), the National Institute on Drug Abuse, (NIDA), and the National Survey on Drug Use and Health have all worked together to try and effectively combat the addiction issue in this once relatively drug free city.  To better understand the city’s specific drug problem, extensive study was done of the city to first gather information to then build off of to form a solution.  Listed below are just some of the results of these studies and surveys:

• Approximately seven percent of Virginia residents reported past-month use of illicit drugs, but the percentage for the city of Virginia Beach on its own has been anticipated to be almost double that percentage.

• The rate of drug-induced deaths in Virginia is lower than the national average, but the rate of drug abuse in the city of Virginia Beach is the same or higher than the national average.  This means that a lot of individuals in Virginia Beach abuse drugs, but not as many individuals die from using and abusing them.

• Marijuana is the most commonly cited drug among primary drug treatment admissions in Virginia, with heroin and opiate pain medications tying for second place.

Fighting Addiction in Virginia Beach

Without a doubt, for addicted Virginia Beach residents, the only was to really successfully fight and tackle a drug addiction crisis is with a full and complete course through an inpatient, residential drug and alcohol addiction and rehabilitation center.  This is the only workable method because only an inpatient center offers the services necessary to fully and completely get someone off of drugs and alcohol.

Finding Sobriety in Virginia Beach

Once one has beaten a drug or alcohol habit in Virginia Beach the opportunities are almost endless.  This is a truly beautiful and exquisite town and urban area with much to offer.  Even when one is in a rehab center here, if his or her family members or loved ones want to come visit, then this would be a great place to do so.
