West Valley City Drug Rehabilitation

West Valley City is a city in Salt Lake County and is a suburb of Salt Lake City in the U.S. state of Utah.  West Valley City mainly acts as a suburb, neighboring town, supporting city, bedroom community, and metro section to the greater city of Salt Lake City.  The population of West Valley City was 129,480 at the 2010 census, making it without a doubt the second-largest city in the state of Utah.

As for its inception and history, the first Anglo-people to live in the area were the Latter Day Saints (individuals of the Mormon faith).  The Euro-Americans arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in the year 1847.  The area was first staked out by a settler of the name of Joseph Harker and his family in the area they named as “over Jordan”.  The city wasn’t incorporated for over a hundred years in 1980 from what was at the time a large, quickly growing unincorporated area, which was variously known as Granger, Hunter, Chesterfield, and Redwood. West Valley City is home to the Maverik Center and USANA Amphitheater.

West Valley City has a relatively prospering economy.  Well-known companies based in West Valley City include Backcountry.com, CR England, FranklinCovey, and USANA Health Sciences, and all of these companies add economic growth and prosperity to the city.

Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse in West Valley City

Utah as a state has some of the worst drug abuse issues in the U.S.  In all honesty, Utah and West Valley City actually have fewer individuals who abuse drugs per capita than the national average.  However, the number of individuals who die from drug abuse per capita is incredibly high in West Valley City and all across the state.

This is the key issue in West Valley City.  For West Valley City residents, methamphetamine is the most commonly used and abused drug, and meth is deadly and dangerous.  This is the reason why so many individuals in West Valley City die from their respective drug abuse.  Whereas most cities experience mostly marijuana abuse and some alcohol abuse West Valley City has a serious meth problem.  If this issue isn’t rectified soon, the entire city could be faced with a major drug addiction epidemic.

Utah’s Rising Drug Crisis: The issue Examined

To better understand the drug abuse issue, and particularly the high overdose deaths, in West Valley City and all across Utah, the State of Utah Department of Health and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, (SAMHSA), both worked together to compile facts and statistics on the issue.  Listed below are just a few of their findings to provide the reader with some context:

• Approximately six percent of the residents in Utah have admitted to past-month use of illicit drugs and drug abuse in general.

• The rate of drug-induced deaths in Utah is much, much higher than the national average.  While not as many individuals in Utah abuse drugs per capita than the national average, far more individuals die from drug abuse in Utah than do nationally.

• Stimulant drugs (including methamphetamine) are the most commonly cited drugs among primary drug treatment admissions in Utah.  This is another unique point.  Most states cite marijuana as the most commonly used and abused drug.  For Utah residents, the most common drug is crystal meth which is far more dangerous and addicted than marijuana is.
