Hilton Head Island, in South Carolina, (sometimes referred to as simply Hilton Head), is a famous resort town located on an island of the same name in Beaufort County, South Carolina, in the United States. The island is only a mere twenty miles northeast of Savannah, Georgia, and ninety-five miles southwest of Charleston. The island features a beautiful twelve miles of beachfront on the Atlantic Ocean and is a very popular vacation destination for American and international tourists alike.  In the year 2004 for example, an estimated two and a quarter million visitors pumped more than $1.5 billion into the local economy, boosting the city and the state at large.

The year-round population for the island was 37,099 at the 2010 census.  During the peak of summer vacation season however, the population can swell to 275,000 easily.  Over the past decade, the island’s population growth rate was at an impressive thirty-two percent.

The island itself was named after Captain William Hilton, who in 1663, identified a headland near the entrance to Port Royal Sound, which he named “Hilton’s Head” after himself.  The island has a very rich history that started with seasonal occupation by Native Americans thousands of years ago, and continued with European exploration and the Sea Island Cotton trade.  Without a doubt, this island is an important piece of South Carolina’s economy, and is also a major cultural and economic center for the local areas.

Drug Addiction Statistics on the Rise

Because Hilton Head Island is such a tourism destination and because it has a very strong economy, the island also has attracted quite a bit of drug trafficking and drug abuse.  This is not just a problem for Hilton Head Island however, but it is in fact a problem for the entire nation.  To draw context to this, some vital facts and statistics have been included below that highlight just some of the aspects of the problem:

• Drug and alcohol addiction and abuse has spiraled out of control in the United States since the turn of the century.  I good way to estimate the impact of substance abuse in the nation is to count how many Americans seek treatment for addiction every year.  On this point, The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, (SAMHSA), reported that well over twenty-three million Americans sought out professional drug and alcohol rehabilitation in the year 2009 alone.  This number represents almost a full ten percent of the U.S. population that is over the age of twelve.

• Alcohol abuse is one of the nation’s greatest underrated and underreported critical issues and potential epidemics.  For example, more Americans seek out rehabilitation for alcohol addiction than for any other type of addiction.  If one were to walk into a treatment center, he or she would find that just under half of the patients residing there had come in for treatment of alcohol addiction.  To give some facts on this, it is estimated that more than forty-one percent of treatment admissions for addiction in the United States were for alcohol abuse, twenty percent of admissions were for heroin addiction treatment, and seventeen percent were for the treatment of marijuana abuse.

Finding Recovery in Hilton Head, What to Do About Addiction

Fighting an addiction is no easy thing.  On average, only about two to six percent of all drug and alcohol addicts are able to kick a drug or alcohol habit on their own, whereas sixty to eighty percent are able to do so if they have the help and much needed assistance of an inpatient addiction rehabilitation center.

For addicts in Hilton Head Island, rehabilitation is really the only answer to the crisis.  Only an inpatient rehab center can offer the extensive services needed to beat a drug habit successfully, and only an inpatient center can provide any kind of a guarantee of longevity of sobriety and happiness of life.
