New York City is the most densely populated city in the entire nation. Not only is the city packed with people, but it is also loaded with historic and iconic landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park, and Broadway. The heavily visited city is divided into five popular boroughs including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island.

Drug Addiction and Abuse in New York City, New York

New York City has developed into a hotbed for drug activity, with Heroin and other Opiates becoming a drug of choice for many unfortunate substance abusers. In fact, according to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, in 2013, 77% of overdoses involved an Opioid. From 2010 to 2013, the rate of Opiate-related deaths doubled, going from 3.1 per 100,000 to 6.2 per 100,000 people.

Unfortunately, some of the facilities that are meant to house and help drug abusers are simply abusing the system. Operators of many “three quarter houses” (which are between a halfway house and independent living) are overcrowding the deplorable living spaces in an effort to defraud Medicaid. Though the government does not run these houses, they are funded by taxpayer dollars, and Mayor Bill de Blasio has launched a major investigation into the operation of these homes.

The city is also taking action to ameliorate the war on drugs, which many have considered as a failure thus far. A current bill, if passed, would create an Office of Drug Policy. The bill would require coordination and collaboration between state agencies, the community, and local policy. Under the program, agencies would put aside their conflicts (which now crop up between public health and law enforcement) to create uniform strategies on drugs. The focus would be to break the cycle of drug abuse and prison time, and get the substance abuser the treatment he or she needs.

These efforts have the potential to fix New York’s high rank in areas such as:

– Marijuana use in the past month by individuals ages 18-25;

– Cocaine use in the past year by individuals ages 12 and older;

– Dependence on illegal drugs by individuals ages 12 and older; and

– Dependence on illegal drugs by individuals ages 18-25.

Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation in New York City, New York

Ramping up efforts in the war on drugs would not only help New York City, but would also help communities up and down the North East Corridor. As a hub for the drug trafficking trade, drugs from the city often end up all over Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Rhode Island. Recently, a fruitful multi-agency investigation yielded a seizure of over 50 million dollars’ worth of Heroin. This major operation will cut off the supply at its source and keep drugs out of the hands of countless individuals across the area.

If you or a loved one are ready to keep drugs out of your own hands, please contact our hotline today to learn your options for recovery in the New York City area.
