Reno is located in the Northwestern part of the state of Nevada. It is located near Lake Tahoe and known as “The Biggest Little City in the World”. It is famous for its casinos and as the birthplace of Caesars Entertainment Corporation. It is the most populous city in Nevada behind Las Vegas metropolitan area. There were only a few pioneers that settled in the Truckee Meadows area. They were subsistence farmers and were able to pick up more business from travelers. When gold was found in the Virginia City area it developed into a small mining community, but the mining rush would develop after the discovery of silver. Reno housed the largest casino, Bank Club, in the 1930’s. The relaxed divorce laws made the city a popular destination for those seeking a divorce. The city also has several outdoor recreational activities for residents and vacationers. It is in close proximity to Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe, and numerous ski resorts. The city has gained some popularity from the comedy television show Reno 911!

Before the 1950’s, Reno was the gambling capital of the United States, but the rise of Las Vegas, buyout of Reno Air, and growth of Native American gaming in California have reduced business. Its location has brought Northern Californian gamblers, while southern Californians frequented Las Vegas. There has been significant growth from the development of larger hotel-casinos. The city plays host to a variety of events to increase revenue. Hot August Nights, Street Vibrations, The Great Reno Balloon Race, a Cinco de Mayo celebration, bowling tournaments and Reno Air Races all help to boost the Reno economy.

Reno Drug Problem

The rise in prescription drug sales, use, and abuse has caused Nevada to have some of the highest prescription drug overdose deaths nationwide. The Prescription Drug Round Up has been created to collect any unused or expired drugs. In the years between 2009 and 2011 Nevada has seen 2,089 prescription drug overdose deaths. Authorities say that the prescription drug problem has become a problem in Nevada because of the availability of the drug. Most people that abuse prescription drugs get them from their own medicine cabinet or that of a family member or friend. Since the start of the Prescription Drug Round Up, 1.5 million prescription pills have been collected in Washoe County. The Northern Nevada HOPES and the Northern Nevada Outreach Team will collect residential sharps and providing information on how to properly dispose of medical syringes.

Youth poverty is rapidly becoming a real concern for the Washoe County and Reno area. While homeless substance abuse and addiction is prevalent it is not the cause of homelessness. For most of these drug addicted homeless, drugs enter the picture after they become homeless. Drugs become a normal part of life for these homeless youths because of their lack of opportunities. These young adults do not have high school diplomas, personal identification, and suffer from severe abuse. Unfortunately, the state handles these individuals with arrests and prosecution. It costs the city considerable amount more to jail these individuals instead of help them break the cycle of drug abuse and homelessness.
