Las Vegas Drug Rehabilitation

Las Vegas, or Sin City, is the most populous city in the State of Nevada. It is internationally known as a vacation city, known for its casinos, gambling, shopping, fine dining, and nightlife. It is the leading financial and cultural center for Southern Nevada. The city is the 29th most populated city in the United States, with a population of 603,488. It is one of the top three leading destinations for conventions, business, and meetings and it is one of the wealthiest cities in the country. It is a leader in the hospitality industry and one of the top tourist destinations in the world.

The city was inhabited by Indians and Mexicans before the 19th century. In 1844, John C. Fremont helped lure pioneers to the area with his writings. The city was founded in 1905 and incorporated into the country in 1911. During the early 1930’s Las Vegas was legalizing casino gambling and reduced residency requirements for divorce to six weeks. It is also the time when the Hoover Dam was being built. The construction led to an increase in population and the work helped shield it from the Great Depression. The city began to grow as an adult hotspot after WWII. It was at this time that the first racially integrated casino-hotel was opened in Las Vegas, Moulin Rouge. Residents of Las Vegas could also see the mushroom cloud from the nuclear bomb testing site, which was 65 miles northwest of the city. The 1960’s saw an explosion of business powerhouses who were buying land and building hotel-casino properties. The work of Steve Wynn brought, The Mirage, Las Vegas’ first mega-casino resort.

Las Vegas Drug Problem

The deaths from heroin overdose have doubled over the past several years. The rise in heroin overdose and addiction are directly related to the rise in prescription drug use. Prescription drug abuse is a result of easy access and high chance of addiction. In response to this growing problem, Las Vegas is fighting back with a prescription pill turn-in event. The goal is to get rid of the excess medications in the community. The CARE and PACT coalitions are running the event as a way to prevent substance abuse.

A Las Vegas doctor is working to rid the practice of prescribing pain killers to patients with long term pain. He believes those that are suffering from pain as a result of injury, surgery, headache, or a twisted ankle is acceptable. Pain, as he says, is linked to every part of the human experience. Individuals must begin to treat pain holistically, instead of going to get pain killers. Individuals suffering from chronic pain and taking prescription medications should change their lifestyles to reduce pain; what he defines as Reanimation. People in pain are afraid to move as a result of their pain, but in actuality those that take prescription meds and do not move do more damage. The success of their program is derived from a survey of previous patient’s long term sobriety. When an individual takes pain killers for pain over a long term their bodies develop a tolerance to the drug and the body works reactively. Long term prescription drug use causes a phenomenon called Opioid Induced Hyperalgesia. The body increases chemicals in the body that cause more pain from the opioids. When they are taken off the drugs the pain reduces and becomes non-existent. The doctor believes that 80% of the pain is in the brain and a change in life-style can greatly reduce the pain. His work could revolutionize how physicians treat pain and reduce the area’s dependence on prescription drugs.
