Joliet Drug Rehabilitation

Joliet is a city located 40 miles southwest of Chicago in the state of Illinois.  It was the fourth largest city in the state as of the 2010 census with a population estimated to increase to 147,806 by July of 2013.  Joliet is a part of the Chicago metropolitan area which is informally referred to as Chicagoland.

Joliet and other surrounding suburbs of Chicago have been expanding at a tremendous rate since the early 1960s.  Joliet is noteworthy for being one of just a small number of boomburbs outside the West Coast, Sun Belt, and Mountain State regions.  The population in the city has more than doubled in the past fifty years.

Joliet was settled in 1833, and became an incorporated city in 1852.  Joliet has experienced past economic troubles like many Midwestern states dependent on manufacturing industry.  In years past Joliet was known as a separate steel-town, but due to the loss of manufacturing opportunities and its close proximity to Chicago it has evolved into to a suburb or exurb.

The Addiction Problem in Joliet

Addiction affects the lives of residents throughout the state of Illinois, and outlying cities like Joliet have seen some of the largest increases in addiction in the area.  In a recent article about juvenile alcohol and drug abuse issues in nearby Merrillville the Post-Tribune reported that that problem has been getting worse for some time.  The story shows that young people are engaging in heavy alcohol and drug use at an alarming rate.

In general, Illinois residents abuse alcohol and drugs at a similar rate to the rest of the country.  The rate for heavy alcohol use and dependence was 7.2 percent in Illinois compared to the national average of 6.6 percent.  2.5 percent of Illinois residents reported being dependent on illicit drugs compared to the national average of 2.7 percent.  While the substance abuse numbers are average it should be noted that heroin addiction occurs at a much higher rate than in most states.

Alcohol is the most widely abused substance in the state, and ranks number one for primary treatment admissions in Illinois as it does in the majority of US states.  In Joliet drug rehab facilities 34.7 percent of admissions are for a drug problem alone.  The remaining 65.3 percent of admissions list alcohol alone (30.8 percent) or a combination of alcohol and other drugs (55.8 percent) as the primary reason for needing the help of a local rehab program.

To better understand the addiction problem in Illinois it is useful to look at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration numbers on primary treatment admissions along with data from a White House report which deals specifically with illicit substances.  The following list contains the substances that Joliet drug rehab facilities see listed as the primary substance of abuse most often in order:

  1. Alcohol – Alcohol is the most common of the addictive substances and affects the lives of more Illinois residents each year than any other.  Overall the state and the Joliet area experiences problems related to alcohol addiction more often than the national average.
  2. Marijuana – Cannabis is the most widely abused illicit substance in the world and ranks slightly ahead of all other drugs for primary drug treatment admissions in Illinois.  Nearly 40 percent of clients at rehab centers in Joliet list marijuana as their drug of choice.
  3. Heroin – Heroin was the top illicit substance for primary treatment admissions in Illinois from 2006 to 2010.  Currently heroin still accounts for 35 percent of clients at Joliet drug rehab facilities primary treatment admissions which is higher than the majority other areas in the country.
  4. Cocaine – Cocaine addiction has been on the decrease in Illinois since it peaked in the 1990s but still accounts for 20 percent of primary treatment admissions there.  The trend in the Joliet area has been an increase in heroin addiction with a decline in cocaine addiction.
  5. Other opiates – Addiction from the nonmedical use of prescription pain relievers has been the fastest growing class of addiction in the United States over the past fifteen years.  The number of primary treatment admissions in Joliet drug rehab facilities has seen a small but consistent rise during that time.  For now the pain pill addiction numbers are relatively low in Joliet, but a high number of young people have reported using these drugs when surveyed.

Alcohol and all of the substances above will lead to dependence for individuals who take them regularly.  Each is responsible for its own unique signs and symptoms, but all produce an addiction which leaves individuals in a cycle of addiction that is hard to break without professional help.  Joliet drug rehab facilities understand the different problems users face early on in the process of addiction recovery, and these facilities are often necessary for addicts to turn their lives around.

Addiction is a complex condition that requires more than just abstinence to overcome for the long-term.  Many alcoholics and addicts can quit for a short periods of time, but they often experience relapse due to the long-lasting symptoms that linger as a result of their addiction.  Drug rehab facilities get their patients off of their substance of choice through detoxification first and foremost, but also use a comprehensive approach to teach their clients what is required to maintain their new found sobriety.  Joliet drug rehab facilities are designed to help addicts through each individual phase of the recovery process, and provide them with the skills necessary for long-term success.
