About the City of Westminster: The City and the Area in Review and in Summary
Westminster is a well-off city in Orange County, California in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. The city was initially founded in the year 1870 by Rev. Lemuel Webber as a Presbyterian temperance colony for himself and for his practitioners. Its name is derived from the Westminster Assembly of 1643, which laid out the basic tenets of the Presbyterian faith for all involved with the church in that area. Interestingly enough, for several years of its early history, its farmers refused to grow grapes because they associated grapes with alcohol and alcohol was severely frowned down upon.
As for its history, Westminster was initially incorporated in the year 1957, at which time it had about 10,755 residents. Originally, the city was named the Tri-City because it was the amalgamation of three cities all in all: Westminster, Barber City, and Midway City. Midway City ultimately turned down incorporation though, leaving Barber City to be absorbed into the newly incorporated Westminster, making the city even larger and more affluent. The former Barber City was located in the western portion of the current city of Westminster and its boundaries.
The city of Westminster also has a very, very powerful and strong economy. The city has a major shopping mall called Westminster Mall, which consists of more than 180 stores all in all. The mall is located south of the 405 freeway, between Goldenwest Street and Edwards Street. Aslo, in Westminster’s Little Saigon community, the Asian Garden Mall (Phước Lộc Thọ), a large Asian mall, exists too and creates good commerce for the city. Since joining the Sequential Brands company, the DVS Shoes footwear brand relocated from Torrance, California to Westminster. All in all, the city is a well off, history rich, affluent, and influential city from one end to the other and through and through.
Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse Both Becoming Major Issues in the City of Westminster
Without a doubt, drug addiction and substance abuse have both become pretty serious issues in the city of Westminster, and if their trend is not curbed, then Westminster will have a very, very serious addiction crisis on their hands. For this city, the greatest problem has been with alcohol and with prescription drugs too. These two substances carry with them by far about eighty percent of the addiction crisis of the United States all in all, and it is these two substances, both legal and both supposedly, “safe”, that kill more Americans every year than all other substances combined. Without a doubt, if the individuals in Westminster keep abusing alcohol and prescription drugs then the city will truly have a crisis on their hands.
Alcohol and prescription drugs are not just a problem in Westminster. In fact, they are a problem everywhere. These two substances are essentially taking over, and if something is not done soon to curb the issue than the entire nation will be faced with a real epidemic.
• In the year of 2013, nearly a full one quarter, (22.9 percent to be exact), of persons of the age of 12 or older were binge alcohol users in the past 30 days alone. This translates to a little more than sixty million people. The rate in 2013 was similar to the estimate in 2012 (20.0 percent), but was much higher than all the years between 2000 and 2011. Binge drinking is simply and easily defined as having five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least 1 day in the 30 days prior to the survey as it is performed.
• According to the organization of the National Survey for Drug Use and Health, (NSDUH), approximately a little more than two million people aged 12 or older tried prescription psychotherapeutic drugs non-medically for the first time within a year before completing the survey. This averages to 5,500 new users every single day in the United States.
