The city of Wasco, (formerly, Dewey and Deweyville) is a city in the San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County, in the state of California, in the United States of America. Wasco is conveniently located 24 miles northwest of Bakersfield, at an elevation of 328 feet.  The population was 25,545 at the most recent 2010 census, as reported by the United States Census Bureau, up from 21,263 at the former 2000 census.

Wasco is widely recognized for being the headquarters of the Tejon Indian Tribe of California, a federally recognized tribe of Kitanemuk, Yokuts, and Chumash indigenous people of California.  Wasco is also known for having its major economic activities in its prominent agricultural capabilities, specifically with the growing of roses.  In fact, no less than 55% of all roses grown in the United States are grown in or around the city of Wasco.

In addition to its agriculture, oil and gas extraction is a significant part of the local economy too, which just adds to the economic successes of this small, Californian city. The large Semitropic Oil Field is along State Route 46 about seven miles west of the town. Formerly a gas field, the region now mainly produces oil instead. Vintage Production, an arm of Occidental Petroleum, is the primary operator as of the year of 2010.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse and Addiction has a Powerful Effect on the City of Wasco

Sadly, drug and alcohol abuse and addiction has made a big effect on Wasco and not in a good way either.  This is a city that has suffered significantly in the last few years and it has shown no real sign of getting any better any time soon either.  The real problem has been that the city has experienced strong and seemingly never-ending exposures to substance abuse, mostly as the youth of the local Indian tribe has been increasingly exposed to narcotics.

That isn’t all though.  Typically general drug abuse problems that are spreading across the nation are also making a big problem in Wasco.  Some of these nationwide problems are:

• The number of cocaine overdose deaths, another critical issue in the United States that was almost completely eradicated by the turn of the century, has now begun to increase and make a serious comeback.  From the year 2001 to the year of 2013 there was a thirty percent increase in the total number of deaths caused by cocaine overdoses of one kind or another.

• Drug and alcohol abuse has far reaching consequences.  One of the most critical issues that takes the most lives in the United States is drunk or drugged driving of automobiles.  In sad and very real truth, more than thirty-one million Americans drove after drug or alcohol use in the year of 2013. The highest rate of those who committed this crime was amongst the age group of 18- to 25-year-olds, also an age range that has the most deaths from drug and alcohol abuse too.

• There has been a seriously critical and scary increase in the amount of visits to emergency departments as a result of drug abuse of one kind or another.  The total and saddening number of drug-related emergency department visits increased by over eighty-one percent from the year 2004, (coming in at roughly two and a half million) to 2009, (almost five million all in all).

Rehabilitation: How the Problem is Confronted in Wasco

Substance abuse has for some time now had a dangerous and damaging effect on the residents of Wasco.  This city has for some time now been the effect of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction, but it hasn’t always been like this.  Prior to the late 1990s, drug and alcohol abuse and addiction never really made a huge impact on this city.  Now though, despite the city’s small size, it really has made a big impact here.

Substance abuse, drug addiction, and alcohol addiction have all become significant aspects of day to day life in and around Wasco.  This area has suffered troubles in the addiction field over and over again for years now.  The city and the surrounding areas never really did have major drug problems until the turn of the century, but now the issue truly has gotten totally severe and complicated.  If something isn’t done soon then it is feared that the issue will more or less take over.

Substance abuse is best tackled and addressed by having all those who are addicted going into and through inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment centers, detox facilities, rehab programs, and recovery organizations.  With centers like these, anyone who is addicted to anything can finally beat their substance abuse habits once and for all and for good.  This truly must be the answer for those addicted in Wasco, because if this is pursued properly and city-wide then the crisis can finally be averted.  Inpatient rehab centers have powerful detoxification programs to address and eradicate chemical dependence, plus they also have strong residential programs and counseling methods that successfully address the mental, psychological, and spiritual aspects to addiction.  Finally, with these skills and methods Wasco can rid itself of its addiction problems once and for all.
