Vacaville, California: The City and General Area in Review and in Summary

Vacaville is a well-known and popular tourism city located in Solano County in beautiful Northern California.  The town itself is almost exactly half way between Sacramento and San Francisco on the I-80.  The city sits approximately forty miles from Sacramento, and fifty miles from San Francisco.  As of the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau, Vacaville had a population of 92,428, making it easily the third largest city in Solano County.

As for its history, the city of Vacaville was originally laid out on land initially deeded by Manuel Cabeza Vaca to William McDaniel in August of 1850.  Its original plat was actually recorded on December 13, 1851.  The city for a long time was a major and important Pony Express stop and was home to many large produce companies and local farms which flourished due to the infamous Vaca Valley’s rich soil, including The Nut Tree.

Today, Vacaville is known for multiple different things, but its tourist attractions are by far the most well-known.  For example, the city holds annual “Vacaville Fiesta Days” which include a parade that features the public school marching bands, gymnasts, and even an electric car showcase, among other things too.  Other sites for tourists include the Vacaville Premium Outlets and the Nut Tree both, which is home to a train for children, a carousel, and even a life-size checkerboard, as well as numerous stores and dining establishments to boot.  Every December, the city holds a Festival of Trees in the ice skating rink and the Tree Lighting Ceremony in which residents of Vacaville gather in downtown to see an impressive 50-foot tree illuminate and enjoy festive music played by the Jepson Band, hot chocolate, and horse-drawn carriage rides as well.  All in all, this is a very pleasant city to visit and to live in as well.

Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse on the Rise in Vacaville, California

Sadly, this is a city that has not escaped the steady rise in drug abuse and addiction that has begun to spread across the United States.  In truth, this has been a pretty serious issue and it has caused much upset and concern for all those involved.  In truth, drug addiction and substance abuse has been indeed growing in popularity and relevancy all across the United States, but Vacaville is a city that has never really struggled with substance abuse before, so the impact is particularly devastating here.

The biggest issue in Vacaville has been increases in drug abuse amongst young adults, and increases in substance abuse with meth and ecstasy, two drugs that young adults find immense interest in in California in general.  These drugs are devastating though, and if something isn’t done soon to really curb their abuse in Vacaville, then the city may yet be faced with a full on addiction crisis.

Though these statistics apply to the nation as a whole, one can see from the below statistics that, true enough, meth and ecstasy abuse are both becoming a very major issue all across the nation:

• The number of past year first time initiates of methamphetamine was 144,000 in 2013, which was similar to the estimates in 2007 to 2012.  The numbers of first year initiates in 2014 and 2015 skyrocketed though.

• The number of past year initiates of the popular yet dangerous club and party drug of ecstasy was 751,000 in the year 2013, which was similar to the number in 2012 (869,000), and was higher than the numbers in 2009, 2010, and 2011.  Most, (69.4 percent in fact), of the recent ecstasy initiates in 2013 were aged 18 or older at the time they first used ecstasy.  Still though, this means that one out of three Americans who abuses a deadly dangerous drug like ecstasy are under the age of 18 at the time of their first use.
