state of California, in the United States of America.  As of the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau, the city had a population of 25,619 all in all, up from 24,292 at the next most recent 2000 census.  The city of South Pasadena is located in the West San Gabriel Valley.  It is a full 3.42 square miles in area and lies between the much larger City of Pasadena, of which it was once a part of, and the sprawling metropolis of the city of Los Angeles.  South Pasadena is the oldest self-builder of floats in the historic Tournament of Roses Parade, and it is also known for its thriving economy, upper middle class and upper class neighborhoods, and its bustling business districts.

Substance Abuse Takes its Toll in South Pasadena

Drug and alcohol addiction and substance abuse in general is a relatively new problem that has left many in South Pasadena in shock.  This veritable micro-epidemic came into view shortly after the turn of the century around the same time as prescription drug abuse also became a major issue in the United States.  Sure enough, as drug abuse all across the country became more and more prevalent, drug abuse and addiction in South Pasadena also grew to unprecedented levels of severity.

For an idea as to how drug and alcohol addiction has not only affected South Pasadena but also the nation as a whole, some statistics have been included below:

• Crystal meth production in the United States is doing something even more terrible than getting Americans hooked on crystal meth.  It is bringing child slavery back to the United States.  For example, in the year of 2004, upward of 3,000 children from the ages of six to fourteen were thankfully recovered from meth labs throughout the United States, but it was estimated that this was just a small percentage of the children who are forced to work in dangerous, deadly meth lab conditions all across the nation and in every single state.

• Heroin abuse and addiction has been on the rise ever since opiate pain medication became immensely popular amongst American residents.  The last several years have seen immense increases in heroin abuse amongst young adults in particular, this demographic being the most likely to abuse pharmaceutical drugs and heroin.  There has been an eighty percent increase in first-time use of heroin among 12 to 17-year-olds since the year of 2002.

• One of the most, “financially beneficial” developments of modern medicine has been that of psychiatric drugs.  This is a real conspiracy here.  Drug companies, pharmacists, medical doctors, psychologists, psycho-therapists, and psychiatrists have profited immensely from prescribing psychiatric drugs.  This has come at a price however, and a big one at that.  Psychiatric drugs, particularly benzodiazepines, are highly addictive and dangerous and even deadly.  For example, from the year 2001 to the year 2013 there was an increase of four times as many deaths from benzodiazepine overdoses.  These were deaths caused by drugs as commonplace as: clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), diazepam (Valium) and alprazolam (Xanax).  A lot of people take these drugs with absolutely no idea of these risks.

Rehabilitation: Exactly How South Pasadena Can Beat its Drug Problem Once and for All

Drug and alcohol addiction has to a degree been one of the most difficult situations that South Pasadena has yet to face.  For a city, substance abuse on a wide scale of proliferation is truly devastating, not only to the local addicts themselves, but to their friends, to their families, to their co-workers, and to the city in general.  Addicted individuals bring with them crime, trouble, domestic strife, unemployment, and general unrest.  South Pasadena has experienced the worst of this in the last few years, and sadly it has shown no real sign of letting up any time soon.

Since the turn of the century, drug and alcohol addiction and the whole matter of substance abuse has begun to make big impacts on different cities all across the nation and South Pasadena has been one of them.  This is a city that never really suffered with substance abuse prior to that.  The city is not a particularly big one, and substance abuse usually only occurred on a very isolated and low key level.  Now the problem has become a lot more serious and significant and in a big way too.

The best way to confront and tackle a drug and alcohol addiction problem on not only an individual level but also on a city-wide level lies in inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment centers, detox facilities, rehab centers, and recovery organizations.  These centers are perfectly outfitted to tackle and eradicate addiction in all who are affected by it, and these positive solutions create permanent recoveries for anyone who is addicted, no matter how intensely they have fallen prey to substance abuse habits.

With rehab, South Pasadena can finally start making progress forward in the right direction.  By rehabilitating those in this area who are addicted to drugs and alcohol, good changes and good results can finally be had for the city of South Pasadena and the surrounding areas too.
