South Gate, California: The City in Review and Summary with Key Points Highlighted

South Gate is easily the seventeenth largest city in all of Los Angeles County, in the state of California.  The city covers 7.4 square miles all in all.  South Gate is located just a mere seven miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.  This city is part of the Gateway Cities region of southeastern Los Angeles County.  As of the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau, the city had a population of 94,396.

South Gate was incorporated on January 20, 1923, and it became known as the “Azalea City” when it adopted the flower as its symbol in the year 1965.  In 1990, South Gate earned even more recognition for itself by being one of ten U.S. communities to receive the All-America City Award from the National Civic League.

South Gate has had an interesting history with its economy.  The city was the location of a General Motors automobile manufacturing facility called South Gate Assembly which was built in the year 1936.  Originally built to manufacture Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac vehicles, it was converted to war production after 1940, and was the primary supplier of aircraft engines for the B-24 Liberator, Douglas C-47 Sky Train, and the Douglas C-54 Sky Master, as the Douglas and Consolidated companies has aircraft manufacturing facilities in Long Beach and San Diego both.

In more modern times, South Gate is a struggling city.  For example, as of June 2009 California lists the unemployment rate in South Gate as 14.4%, with an actual negative job growth.  The income per capita is only a mere $11,566, which includes all adults and children both.  The median household income is only $41,064.   Finally, on July 9, 2009, the South Gate City Council held a special meeting where a resolution was adopted declaring a fiscal emergency for the entire City of South Gate.

Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse in South Gate

Sadly, a very common after effect of a dropping economy and rising unemployment rates is of course a major increase in drug addiction and substance abuse in that given area as well.  This is sad, but it is true, and it has never been truer than it is right now.  Drug addiction and substance abuse in general is on the rise in South Gate.  The city has had struggles with its economy since before the economic recession of 2007 and 2008, and the city has not been able to bounce back from it like so many others have.  In fact, the city has gotten much worse and worse with drug and alcohol addiction and abuse as each year has gone by.

Almost all drugs are being continuously abused in South Gate, but opiates, alcohol, and cocaine and meth are the most common ones.  Unfortunately, it is also amongst the young adults that there is the most addiction and the most abuse which is unfortunate because it is with these individuals that the city stands to lose the most.

Facts and Stats: Information on How Far Drug and Alcohol Addiction Has Gotten in the U.S.

Sadly, drug addiction and substance abuse in general has gotten out of hand all across the nation.  To emphasize this, the entire country is struggling, and every state in the entire country is struggling in its own way.  However, California’s problem is very unique, and the problem in South Gate is a perfect epitome of that.  Listed below are some facts and statistics relevant to the issue, recorded here so that the reader can get some context as to just how major and severe of an issue that this really is:

• The rate of current use of just any type of illicit drugs in general among young adults of the age range of 18 to 25 in the year 2013, (21.5 percent to be exact), was similar to the rates in 2009 to 2012, (ranging from 21.3 to 21.6 percent), which was consistent with the very steady rate of current marijuana use in this age group during this time (19.1 percent in 2013 and ranging from 18.2 to 19.0 percent in 2009 to 2012).  Since 2013 however, drug abuse amongst this age group has now rapidly approached twenty-eight percent of the population of this age group.

• Among young adults of the ages of 18 to 25, the rate of current non-medical use of prescription-type drugs in 2013 was perhaps higher than it has ever been at before, as prescriptions drugs continue to make a major impact on American society.  In truth, about five percent of the American population between the ages of 18 to 25 is currently addicted to prescription drugs.

Rehabilitation: The Way Out of the Trap for South Gate Addicts

For those addicted in South Gate, the obvious answer to winning the battle against addiction quickly and once and for all lies in such individuals moving through an inpatient rehab program as quickly and as efficiently as is possible.  To do this those who are struggling must go through an actual rehab center, and not just want to get clean or talk about getting clean.  Since the early 1900s, inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment centers, detox facilities, rehab programs, and recovery organizations have been the number one most successful way to win the battle against addiction once and for all and for all those involved.

Thanks to rehab, anyone who is addicted in South Gate has a chance at beating addiction once and for all.  With rehab, anyone can win the battle against addiction if they try hard enough and if they work at it.  It takes a considerable amount of effort but it is doable and it is workable, and with the detox and counseling techniques offered at inpatient rehab centers, anyone can do it.
