Signal Hill is a pleasant, solitary city that stands uniquely atop a hill in California and located in the overall Greater Los Angeles area. An enclave-city that is completely surrounded by the city of Long Beach, Signal Hill was incorporated on April 22, 1924, roughly three years after oil was discovered there and industry began to build up there because of it. As of the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau, the city population came in at about 11,465.
Signal Hill is known not only for its bustling and successful oil industry and other industries, but it is also known for being one of the nicest and most aesthetically pleasing cities of its size in the entire state of California. The city is quite exclusive because of its location on a hilltop. There are also several pedestrian-only trails that travel between various parks and roadways. Hiking along these trails, as well as on the sidewalks in Signal Hill is very, very popular for locals and tourists alike. Some sections can be found that are between a 15% and 25% grade even making for a tough and hard work out for all included.
Signal Hill is also known for being a city of educational attainment. The American University of Health Sciences (AUHS) is located within the city of Signal Hill and provides a wide variety of educational services to locals. The university offers an education in Allied Healthcare for one thing, which offers degrees such as a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR), and Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Science (BSPS). The university is currently working towards opening a Doctorate of Pharmacy program, which will bring more students into the college and into the town as a result.
Addiction Strikes a Blow in Signal Hill
Signal Hill is rapidly (like many other California cities and towns) falling under the malicious spell of drug and alcohol addiction and substance abuse in general. These issues and these problems have shown no sign at all of getting any better any time soon. The only sign that is being seen right now is that substance abuse is becoming more and more common in California small towns, Signal Hill included.
What has occurred here is that more and more drug dealers and traffickers have outreached from the bigger cities nearby into the middle class to upper middle class cities and towns. Signal Hill got in the way from this spread like so many other towns did. Drug dealers, criminals, traffickers, and pushers have all worked to spread drugs and alcohol all across the nation and into towns like Signal Hill. This has been particularly devastating for them because such towns have had little to no experience when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, unlike the bigger cities that have been fighting these problems for decades.
Creating Effective Change in Signal Hill with Rehabilitation
The best way to address an addiction problem, no matter what the problem is, is with inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment centers, detox facilities, rehab programs, and recovery organizations. Sadly, very few who are addicted every actually do go to rehab. This is what needs to change in Signal Hill.
Of the no less than a full 22.5 million people of the age of 12 or older in 2014 who needed treatment for a problem related to the use of alcohol or illicit drugs, there were an estimated 4.1 million people all in all who received any substance use treatment in the past year and 2.6 million people who received treatment at a specialty facility of one kind or another. These numbers represent no less than 1.6 percent of people aged 12 or older who received any substance use treatment and 1.0 percent who received specialty treatment in the past year alone. Basically, there are far more people who use and abuse drugs than get clean from drugs. Furthermore, more people become addicted to drugs and alcohol every year than get clean from such substance abuse problems, which is very, very true in California and in the small towns like Signal Hill.
Signal Hill needs to focus on rehabilitation centers that also address the mental and underlying problems that go along with addiction. In the year of 2014, about 35.5 million adults of the age of 18 or older, (14.8 percent of the population aged 18 or older which is a lot), received mental health care during the past 12 months. A lot of these individuals were also addicted to drugs and alcohol. The estimate of 14.8 percent of adults aged 18 or older in 2014 who received mental health care in the past 12 months was greater than the estimates from 2002 to 2011, but it was similar to the estimates in 2012 and 2013. One thing that remained constant though was the fact that a hefty portion of these individuals also had addiction problems which may or may not have been addressed.
If addiction and mental struggles are addressed successfully in Signal Hill then this area will benefit greatly from such changes. Addiction is a big problem here. In a city of ten-thousand people, it does not take a lot of addicts to make big problems, and it is estimated that this city has hundreds of addicts living there. This is bad news indeed for Signal Hill, bad news that can be completely removed with the effective application of inpatient rehabilitation.
