All About the City of Santa Barbara California: The City in Summary, in Review, and Highlighted
Santa Barbara is well known as the county seat of Santa Barbara County in the state of California in the western United States. Situated as it is on a south-facing section of coastline, actually the longest such section on the West Coast of the United States, the city lies between the steeply rising Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean both. Santa Barbara actually has a great climate too that is often described as “Pleasantly Mediterranean”, and the city itself has been promoted as the “American Riviera”. Without a doubt, this city has earned fame and infamy for its scenery, climate, and geography alone.
As of the year 2014, the city had an estimated population of 91,196, according to the United States Census Bureau’s annual estimate. This number was coincidentally up from 88,410 in 2010, making it the second most populous city in the county after Santa Maria, while the contiguous urban area, which includes the cities of Goleta and Carpinteria both, along with the unincorporated regions of Isla Vista, Montecito, Mission Canyon, Hope Ranch, Summerland, and others, has an approximate population of 220,000. The population of the entire county in 2010 ranked in at a full 423,895.
The city is not only a beautiful city, but it also has a powerful and impressive economy of its own. In addition to being a popular tourist and resort destination both, the city economy also includes a large service sector, education, technology, health care, finance, agriculture, manufacturing, and local government all together. In 2004 for example, the service sector accounted for fully 35% of all of the local employment. Education in particular is well represented there, with five institutions of higher learning on the south coast, (the University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara City College, Westmont College, Antioch University, and the Brooks Institute of Photography). The Santa Barbara Airport serves the city, as does Amtrak. U.S. Highway 101 connects the Santa Barbara area with Los Angeles to the southeast and San Francisco to the northwest all in all. Located behind the city a bit and in and beyond the Santa Ynez Mountains, is the Los Padres National Forest, which contains several remote wilderness areas that also attract dedicated visitors every year. All in all, this whole area is quite impressive and highly desired for many.
Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse in the City of Santa Barbara
Sadly, drug addiction and substance abuse has been relatively out of control in the city of Santa Barbara of late. This has been an unfortunate truth for the city and for its residents, but a truth it has been nonetheless. Unfortunately, for those addicted to drugs and alcohol in the city of Santa Barbara and the surrounding areas, it often feels as though there might not be any way out of the situation for those afflicted. There is a way out, but it takes a lot of work and persistence.
Unfortunately, Santa Barbara’s powerful economy and attractiveness as a city in general has made for a powered attraction by those who would be interested in making the city into a drug addiction central. In a lot of ways this is what has happened here because the youth of the city has seen some immensely rising drug addiction and abuse statistics and the issue has been a problem for the city’s grown adults too. If something is not done soon to address the situation, it is feared that the problem will grow to epic proportions in just a matter of a few years or even just several months.
