Reedley is a small city in Fresno County, in the state of California, in the United States of America. Reedley is conveniently located in the beautiful San Joaquin Valley, just twenty-two miles east-southeast of Fresno, at an elevation of 348 feet.  The population at the 2010 census ranked it in at 24,194 residents all in all.  The city to this day still has its chief economic source as agriculture, particularly fruit and vegetable cultivation but also involving other methods of agriculture too.

Given the continuous success of agricultural activities here, the city has now dubbed itself, “The World’s Fruit Basket”. Reedley holds many festivals year round that recognize this fact. The city of Reedley hosts the annual Reedley Fiesta in October, the Reedley Electrical Christmas Parade in December, the Reedley Street Faire in May, the Reedley Certified Farmers Market, (Wednesday evening, in the summer), the Reedley Taste of the Town in September, and many, many other local festivities to keep the residents and visitors busy and entertained.  Almost everyone in the city is very busy and very hardworking, so the regular festivals make for high spirits and good morale throughout.

To help add to the enjoyment of the city, Reedley is also situated along the Kings River and in the summer, many local residents and visitors drive to Cricket Hollow Park and Reedley Beach as well to enjoy a brief reprieve from the day to day work.  The people of this city know how to work, but they also know how to have a good time too.

Addiction on the Rise in and Around Reedley

Sadly, Reedley as a city and those who live there have begun to suffer in the form of experiencing increased drug and alcohol abuse and addiction amongst its once totally clean and sober residents.  This town is small enough that, until recently, the city never really had big problems with substance abuse issues until the economic recession of 2007, 2008, and 2009.  At that time, a lot of drug addicts and substance abusers in big inner cities and metropolitan and urban areas could no longer afford drugs.  To cope, drug criminals expanded their practices out into small cities, suburbs, bedroom communities, supporting towns, and rural towns.  Reedley was one of these unfortunately.

Substance abuse is a big problem in California and in other cities too now because of this and for other reasons.  Some of the effects are pretty serious and pretty unique.  For example:

Drug abuse is starting to affect women far more than it ever used to.  According to the prestigious association of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC), the number of women who lost their lives by overdosing on just one type of drug, (opioid pain relievers to be specific), rose by more than four-hundred and fifteen percent between the years of 1999 and 2010.  To put down the numbers as they were exactly, in the year 2010, there were a total of 6,631 deaths among women involving opioid pain reliever overdoses.  This heavily increased number is compared with the 1999 total of a mere 1,287 such deaths among women from the same type of drug substance.

Rehabilitation Sought as a Way to Beat Addiction in Reedley

Drug and alcohol abuse has for over a decade had a significant impact on the local residents in and around Reedley.  For these individuals, the problem has been a pretty significant one to say the least.  Though this is not a particularly big city, it does have a big drug problem.  This has been a huge problem in this city.  As Reedley is a small city, it really has felt the effects of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction more intensively than other cities have.  It only takes a few hundred addicts to make a huge impact in a city the size of Reedley, and that is exactly what has occurred here in more recent years.

Reedley is a city that has suffered over and over again with substance abuse and addiction issues for over a decade.  Its proximity to other bigger cities and urban areas and its upper middle class and upper class population has made it an ideal target for drug dealing, trafficking, and drug pushing.  The mindset of Reedley drug dealers has been, “This city is so small and off the beaten path, law enforcement will never know to look here”.  This sadly has been the truth of things here, and the situation will probably do nothing but get worse as the years go by unless massive action is taken to correct this issue.

The way to conquer addiction in Reedley lies in getting all who are addicted there into and through inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment centers, detox facilities, rehab programs, and recovery organizations.  These are the most effective means of addressing addiction problems by far, and with these approaches quite literally anyone who is addicted to anything is able to beat addiction permanently.  This is the main problem and the main thing that needs to be handled in Reedley right now.  Thankfully, with the help of inpatient rehab programs, anyone in Reedley who is addicted and willing to get help can find it and can get recovered and sobered up.
