Port Hueneme is a small, pleasant, and aesthetic beach city in Ventura County, in the state of California, in the United States of America.  This city is surrounded by the lager city of Oxnard and the Santa Barbara Channel too. The name of this city actually derives from the Spanish spelling of the Chumash “wene me”, meaning in English, “Resting Place”.

As for its history, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo explored this area and the adjacent Channel Islands in October of the year 1542. The town’s name was officially changed to Port Hueneme in 1939 and was incorporated March 24, 1948, though there had been a settlement of individuals living here for decades before that.  For more on its history, the man Thomas Bard learned of the submarine canyon at Point Hueneme, and he proceeded to take advantage of the canyon depth to construct the infamous Hueneme Wharf in 1871. The existing street grid of the town was formally laid out later on in the year of 1888.  In fact, until the construction of the Montalvo Cutoff that brought the railroad to nearby Oxnard, the wharf was the principal means of transportation for that entire portion of Ventura County lying south of the Santa Clara River. For a time Hueneme was the second largest grain shipping port on the Pacific coast between 1871 and 1895.

Nowadays, Port Hueneme is more of a tourist town and a retail town than a port city.  Port Hueneme has a south-facing sand beach, known for its surfing and body boarding. The beach has a wooden fishing pier and is about a mile long between Ormond Beach and the Point Hueneme Light at the harbor entrance shared by the naval base and the port both. The Waterfront Promenade, also known as the Lighthouse Promenade, provides a paved public access along the shoreline with two historic sites at view points, these being the 1872 Wharf and the Oxnard Packing House.  There are also picnic tables and barbecue grills dotted all over the place to give tourists and residents alike a good place to eat.  The city has made a strong transition from a transportation and shipping hub, into an aesthetic tourist destination instead.

Drug Abuse in Port Hueneme

Being that this city is a tourist town and that there is a lot of traffic and travel going through here, that also leads it to being a pretty high traffic area for drugs too.  This has been an ongoing issue in Port Hueneme that has been concerning over and over again for quite some time now.  In fact, Port Hueneme has been known in the past for being an underground trafficking hub, but there has also been years where this wasn’t really a problem at all.  Certainly, the issue has been one that’s been quite off and on and off and on as the years have gone by.  True enough, the problem is sometimes really bad, and sometimes it is rather negligible.

For the last several years in a row, drug and alcohol abuse has been a bit of an issue in Port Hueneme.  This city has suffered time and time again with different drug and alcohol abuse issues and there has been little to nothing that anyone who lives here has been able to do about it to get it to come down in more recent years.  The sporadic spikes in Port Hueneme have seemed to just level out, and it would just seem that the city is experiencing intensive substance abuse problems that don’t seem to be going away on their own like it used to.  Now more than ever it is important for the locals in the area to rise up and do something about these issues.

Rehabilitation Sought as a Solution

In Port Hueneme, it is believed that now more than ever the residents of the city need to come together to do something about the current addiction problem. It would seem that it is not going away any time soon, and that has a lot of people here really quite worried.  For so long this city could count on an occasional spike in drug abuse and drug trafficking and then it would die down.  Well, it spiked a few years ago and it hasn’t gone down since.

This is where rehabilitation needs to step in.  With the help of rehabilitation, it will actually be a feasible act to simply remove addiction in an area by curing those who live in that area of their dire substance abuse habits.  This is obviously what is needed most in Port Hueneme.  The only explanation for why there is such a serious drug problem here is that there are now local residents who are actually addicted to drugs and alcohol, and that this is no longer just a drug party scene, but an actual addiction scene.

Rehabilitation will handle this and get rid of it, because rehab will actually address the individuals themselves who are addicted.  Once rehabilitation does its work, there won’t be a demand for drugs in Port Hueneme and the problem will effectively dissipate.
