About the City of Pacifica

The City of Pacifica is easily spread along a six-mile (9.7-kilometer) stretch of coastal beaches and hills in north central California. The city comprises several relatively small valleys spread between Sweeney Ridge in the east, Montara Mountain to the south, and the Pacific Ocean’s rocky bluffs to the west and north.

Pacifica is very well known regionally as a popular surfing destination. Surfers and families often visit Linda Mar Beach for this reason.  Rockaway Beach is a scenic location and offers recreation, shopping and dining too. 2005 marked the opening of the top ranked Pacifica Skateboard Park as well.

Pacifica is also a popular mountain biking destination, with many trails crossing the hillsides that surround the city, including Pedro Mountain Road, Sweeney Ridge, and areas of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and many more.  Fishermen frequent the local beaches and the Pacifica Pier, often catching Striped Bass and Salmon and other types too. Pacifica is also a popular place to hike, with many trails that wind along the beaches and bluffs, including Mori Point, San Pedro Valley County Park, the Sanchez Adobe, and Milagra Ridge.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse and Addiction in Pacifica

There has been a big problem with rising addiction issues in and around Pacifica.  This is an area that has seen steadily rising drug abuse problems not only here but in other areas nearby too.  If something isn’t done about it then it will of course gradually worsen more and more to a point where it all but takes over.  For some statistics on it:

• Alcohol kills 6.5 times more teenagers than all illicit drugs combined.  This is easily the most dangerous by far and has been for some time now.  Underage drinking costs the U.S. more than $58 billion each year in accidents, injuries, collateral damage, bills, and taxes.  Of those entering a drug abuse treatment program in the year of 2008, 11.6% of them were between the ages of twelve and twenty.

• Teen drug abuse statistics show daily marijuana use among 12th-graders is at its highest point since the early 1980s in fact.  This is concerning as marijuana is a huge gateway drug for these individuals.  Perceived risk of marijuana decreased in all ages, which causes them to abuse in more in fact.  Teenage drug abuse facts indicate abuse of prescription and over-the-counter medication remains high too.

• Cocaine use peaked in the late 1980s and early 1990s and had fallen until 2010.  Now it is on the rise again and win a big way too.  Methamphetamine is on the rise in rural areas and in urban areas too. Methamphetamine is mostly abused by people aged 15 to 25 but just recently it has begun to grow in popularity in people between the ages of 25 and 40.

• It was found out recently that sadly one-in-five people who recreationally use alcohol will become dependent on it at some point in their lives, even if that point does not happen for a few years, it wills till happen for them.  Up to 20% of people who are treated in an emergency room are thought to have alcohol use problems of some kind or another and it was that problem or an effect of it that landed them in the emergency room in the first place.

• In the year of 2013, about 10% of high school seniors abused stimulants (Adderall, Ritalin) during the past year. Another 10% of them abused tranquilizers or sedatives; 9% abused opioid pain killers (Vicodin, OxyContin); 8% abused synthetic marijuana; and 5% abused cough and cold medicine. Fewer than about 5% of high school seniors admitted to abusing other drugs.

• Ever wonder how to tell if a teen is abusing drugs and alcohol?  The warning signs are definitely there and the statistics are so bad that it would behoove the nation to know how to tell if a teen is using substances.  Certain warning signs may help parents, teachers, family, and friends determine a teen has a substance abuse problem easily. Changes in personality and sleep habits may offer clues for one. Trouble at school, significant change in groups of friends, and failing grades may be other signs too. A teen who is argumentative, often lies, is withdrawn, or breaks the law or rules at home or school may have a problem as well. Red, bloodshot eyes, fatigue, depression, poor health, lack of interest, and changes in grooming, dressing, or appearance may all point to drug use and abuse of one kind or another.

Rehabilitation for Fighting Addiction

A lot of concern and consternation has been traded back and forth about rising drug and alcohol abuse and addiction statistics in all different parts the United States. Certainly, this has been an increasing issue in every sector of the nation, but some cities have felt it stronger and more severely than others. Pacifica is one of these cities. Even though Pacifica is not a very big city, it’s proximity to major drug trafficking travel routes for the nation the result of that has been that drugs often find their way into Pacifica and stay there.

It is circumstances like these and others that have created so much trouble in and around Pacifica. In particular Pacifica has experienced a lot of problems with youth substance abuse, which is quite concerning because drug and alcohol abuse tends to affect young adults a lot more severely and is a lot more likely to be fatal for them than it is for older adults.

Thankfully though, there does exist a way that those addicted in and around Pacifica can win the battle against substance abuse once and for all. This is speaking of course of those addicted and afflicted in and around the city going through a full and complete inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment center, detox facility, rehabilitation program, and recovery organization. With rehabilitation, creating sobriety for an entire city is actually a very possible thing to do.

1. Rehabilitation will be highly helpful for Pacifica especially since the vast majority of the drug and alcohol addicted individuals in the city are under the age of 25. For this age range, an inpatient environment that has both detoxification facilities and a wide plethora of counseling and therapy methodologies is what is needed to create a full recovery.

2. Detoxification can be found at an inpatient rehabilitation program alone and this will be helpful in Pacifica as most of those addicted there also have chemical dependency issues too.

3. Counseling, therapy, life skills, electives, coping strategies, relapse prevention, and group sessions can also all be found at inpatient centers and anyone, whether they are young or old, who is addicted in Pacifica can benefit greatly from these techniques.

Addiction to drugs and alcohol is certainly a horrific problem to have. It is not the end of the world though, and it does not have to be fatal. With the help of rehabilitation, Pacifica can actually
make a full recovery and a complete turnaround once and for all.
