About the City of Norwalk, California

Norwalk is an important suburban city in Los Angeles County, California, in the United States. The population was 105,549 at the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau, up from 103,298 at the 2000 census.  It is the 64th most populous city in all of the state of California.

Founded in the late 19th century, Norwalk was incorporated as a city in the year 1957.  It is located just a mere 17 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles and is part of the Greater Los Angeles area too, and a major component in the great LA area.  Norwalk is also a member of the Gateway Cities Council of Governments. Norwalk’s sister cities are Morelia, Michoacán, and Hermosillo, Sonora, in Mexico.

As for its history, Norwalk has changed much over the decades.  At the turn of the 19th century, Norwalk had become established as a major dairy center for not only California but also for the whole nation.  Of the 50 local families reported in the 1900 census, most were associated with farming or with the dairy industry in general.  Norwalk was also the home of some of the largest sugar beet farms in all of Southern California during this era and time period.  Many of the dairy farmers who settled in Norwalk during the early part of the 20th century were of Dutch decent.  After the 1950s, the Hispanic population in Norwalk grew significantly as the area became increasingly residential and less and less industrial.

Today, Norwalk is a major player in the overall economy and essential culture of the greater LA area.  This is without a doubt a city that has seen much, been through much, and has come out winning left and right.  It is predicted that this city will continue to go on, improving and growing like it always has.

Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse on the Rise in Norwalk, California

Sadly, drug addiction and substance abuse has been on the rise in a big way in the city of Norwalk.  Without a doubt, this is a pretty major issue here and it has been for some time now.  In fact, since the turn of the century a lot of the drug trafficking and dealing attention that was being put on Los Angeles at the time got moved off of the bigger city and was instead put on outlying and supporting towns, cities, neighborhoods, and suburbs like Norwalk.  This is quite unfortunate, as the city was not at all prepared for the degree of substance abuse and drug trafficking that hit it.  It is feared that, if something is not done soon to avert this phase then the city will struggle even more with drug addiction and substance abuse.

Facts and Statistics: What is Occurring with Drug Abuse and Addiction in the Nation at Large

To better understand the drug addiction crisis, some facts and statistics that are pertinent to the issue have been included below:

• In United States Federal courts in 2007, 5,477 individuals were found guilty of crack cocaine-related crimes and offenses.  More than 95% of these offenders had been involved in crack cocaine trafficking as the primary offense.

• The United States government reported in 2008 that approximately 13 million people over the age of 12 have used methamphetamine, and 529,000 of those are regular, today users.
• In the year 2007, 4.5% of American high-school seniors and 4.1% of tenth grade students reported using methamphetamine at least once in their lifetimes.

• In the United States, the percentage of drug treatment admissions due to methamphetamine and amphetamine abuse tripled from 3% in 1996 to 9% in 2006.  This is a drug that is becoming immensely popular and fast.  Some states have much higher percentages, such as Hawaii, where 48.2% of the people seeking help for drug or alcohol abuse in 2007 were methamphetamine users and abusers.

• In the United States, the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health found that 1.1 million youths aged 12 to 17 had used inhalants in the past year alone.
