Facts and Statistics: Drug Addiction Booming Nationwide
Modesto is not the only place that has come under a significant amount of drug addiction and substance abuse lately. In fact, the entire country of the United States has begun to experience significant increases in drug abuse and addiction in each and every state.
The National Survey on Drug Use and Health, (NSDUH), along with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, (SAMSHA), the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, (NIDA), the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC), the Trust for American Health, (TAH), and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, (NIAAA), have all worked together to study and research the increases in drug abuse that have been occurring nationwide. The idea here was to study drug abuse in cities like Modesto all across the nation to better understand the nation’s drug crisis. Listed below are some of the findings of these studies, included here so as to provide the reader with context as to just how serious of an issue this really is:
• There is a direct connection to the use of methamphetamine and the overall American work ethic. As many as 9.4 million Americans have used the drug of crystal meth of something similar to it at least once. Many users are workers, high school students and truck drivers.
• In 1999, 14.8 million Americans used illicit drugs. About 3.5 million are dependent on illicit drugs and 8.2 million people are dependent on alcohol. Now, just sixteen years later, the number has skyrocketed to a full 23.5 million people who have not only used illicit drugs, but who are addicted to illicit drugs and alcohol.
• Every day, 3,000 kids become regular smokers, and a third of them will eventually die of tobacco-related causes. Meanwhile, two out of three 12- to 17-year-olds who smoked cigarettes in the last year show signs of addiction. Studies also show that, while obviously not many individuals who smoke actually do become drug addicts, but smokers are more than twice as likely to abuse drugs than non-smokers.
