Malibu is a very, very pleasant and affluent beach city in Los Angeles County, in the state of California, situated just a mere 30 miles west of Downtown Los Angeles. Incorporated in the year of 1991, the city is famous for its warm climate and an absolutely picturesque 21-mile coastline with many sandy beaches and beautiful tourism locations. The area is also known for being the home of many, many Hollywood movie stars and other people in the entertainment industry mixed in with generally very affluent residents. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 12,645.

This city of Malibu is quite famous.  Signs around the city proclaim that it offers, “27 miles of scenic beauty”, referring to the historical 27-mile Malibu coast spanning from Point Mugu in Ventura County east to Tuna Canyon.  This coast line is quite infamous and is a major tourism destination.

Malibu is a rich town.  The median income for a household in the city was $102,031, and the median income for a family was $123,293. Males had a median income of $100,000 versus a much lower $46,919 for females. The per capita income for the city was about $74,336. About 3.2% of families and 7.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.8% of those under age 18 and 1.1% of those of the age of 65 or over.

Drug and Alcohol Addiction Hits Hard in Malibu

The steady spread of drug and alcohol addiction through California has not avoided Malibu.  In spite of the efforts of local law enforcement to keep drugs out of Malibu, the appeal of all of the wealth in Malibu to be had by drug criminals has been too tempting to drug dealers and traffickers and such individuals have still have found a way to get substances into this city.  Sadly, this has been the case and in a big way too, and the effect has been terrible to say the least, especially amongst the young adult population of the city.

Statistics on the Malibu Epidemic

The real problem in Malibu has been with the young adult population.  For example:

• Among young adults of the ages of 18 to 25 in California, the rate of current illicit drug use in 2013 was similar to the rates in 2009 to 2012 (ranging from 21.3 to 21.6 percent), but was higher than the rates in 2002 to 2008 (ranging from 19.4 to 20.3 percent conversely).  Furthermore, 2014 and 2015 saw increases in the abuses of these drugs in pretty serious parameters.

• The rate of current marijuana use in the year of 2013 among young adults aged 18 to 25 (19.1 percent), was actually similar to the rates in 2009 to 2012, (ranging from 18.2 to 19.0 percent), but was higher than the rates in 2002 to 2008, (ranging from 16.1 to 17.3 percent).  Obviously marijuana is an increasing trend for this age group and especially in California.

• In the year of 2013, among persons aged 12 or older, the rate of current illicit drug use was 3.1 percent among Asians, 8.8 percent among Hispanics, 9.5 percent among whites, 10.5 percent among blacks, 12.3 percent among American Indians or Alaska Natives, 14.0 percent among Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, and 17.4 percent among persons reporting two or more races.  Sadly, substance abuse is definitely something that affects a vast and high number of people from all different ethnic backgrounds.

• Addiction is more common than many realize and especially on the West coast too. It is actually an epidemic, and it currently is responsible for the ruining of millions of lives.  There were approximately 20.6 million people in the United States over the age of 12 with an addiction in 2011.  There were about twenty-five million Americans in the United States who were addicted to drugs and alcohol in 2015.

Rehabilitation is the Key for Malibu

The best shot that Malibu has for addressing their addiction crisis lies in those who live there getting those who are addicted there into and through inpatient rehab centers and programs.  This now more than ever is needed and wanted.  The crisis is a big one here and has been for some time now.  More than ever the crisis issues in Malibu need to be addressed, and the city will never know freedom from addiction until all of those who are addicted there get through rehab centers and programs.

For the addicts of Malibu, an approach through detoxification programs and rehab centers is what is needed and what is wanted.  With these tools and with these plans put into effect, the issues can actually be resolved in this beautiful city once and for all.  Inpatient rehab is easily the most effective approach for any city that is trying to get rid of a drug problem, and with effective rehabilitation delivered to the addicts of Malibu, the city will immediately start to notice improvements.
