As for its history, the area of Los Angeles was initially home to the Chumash and Tongva Indian tribes.  Los Angeles was then claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would eventually become Alta California, a Spanish Provence.  The city was officially founded on September 4, 1781 by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve.  The city and the surrounding area then became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence.  In the year 1848 and at the very end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States itself.

The city is a hugely populated area.  The city of L.A. is the focal point of the larger Los Angeles metropolitan area and the Greater Los Angeles Area region, which contains over 13 million and over 18 million people respectively as of the 2010 United States Census Bureau’s census.  This massive population makes it one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world as well as the second-largest in the United States overall.

Los Angeles is known for many things, and has earned its fame and recognition in many different ways.  Nicknamed the City of Angels, Los Angeles is a very definitely global city with a diverse economy in entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, education, medicine and research.  The city itself has been ranked sixth in the Global Cities Index and 9th Global Economic Power Index.  The city is also home to renowned institutions covering a broad range of professional and cultural fields and is one of the most substantial economic engines within the country of the United States.

As for its economy, the Los Angeles combined statistical area, (CSA), has a gross metropolitan product, (GMP), of $831 billion as of the year 2008, making it the third-largest in the entire world, after the Greater Tokyo and New York metropolitan areas.  Los Angeles includes Hollywood and leads the entire world in the creation of television productions, video games, and recorded music.  The city is also one of the leaders in motion picture production.  Additionally, Los Angeles hosted the Summer Olympic Games in 1932, 1984, and is currently bidding for the 2024 Summer Olympics as well.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse and Addiction in the City of Los Angeles

• In Los Angeles, drug and alcohol abuse is the fourth leading cause of premature death among men (15,446 deaths) and the seventh leading cause of premature death among women (5,495 deaths) within just the LA county alone.

• Grim results from the 2011 published Los Angeles County Health Survey show that 5.2% of adults, (of the age of 18 and over), or an estimated 379,000 individuals in all, reported misusing any form of prescription drugs in the past year.

• Prescription drug abuse is a serious issue in Los Angeles.  In the year 2009, there were more than 650 prescription and over the counter, (OTC), drug-related deaths as well as more than 3,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 emergency department visits for prescription/OTC drug overdose among LAC residents.

• Between the years of 2005 and 2010, the number of admissions to publicly funded substance
abuse treatment programs in California for opioid abuse almost doubled from just 674 to 1,022.

• There were 8,265 drug-related deaths between 2000 and 2009 in Los Angeles, and approximately 61% of those deaths involved a commonly abused prescription/OTC drug in conjunction with other, illegal drugs.

• In the year 2009, there were 3,048 hospitalizations and 5,382 emergency department visits for prescription/OTC drug overdose amongst Los Angeles residents.
