Loma Linda, (an eloquent term in Spanish for “beautiful hill”) is a city in San Bernardino County, in the state of California, in the United States, that was incorporated in the year of 1970.  The population was 23,261 at the 2010 census, up from 18,681 at the previous 2000 census.  The central area of the city was actually originally known as Mound City; its eastern half was originally an unincorporated community known as Bryn Mawr.

There is a strong, well grounded, and very large population of Seventh Day Adventists in Loma Linda.  A curious thing about this group is that these individuals have one of the highest rates of longevity in the world.  In doing a study about it, researcher Dan Buettner has labeled Loma Linda as a Blue Zone, an area where the longevity is appreciably higher than the national average and a substantial proportion of humans live past 100 years of age. Buettner’s book, The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest, attributes Loma Linda’s longevity rate to Adventist cultural health and diet practices that all equate to longer life spans. The city has strict controls on the sale of alcohol for example, has a no tolerance ban on smoking, and its largest supermarket does not even sell meat.

This is an interesting city to say the least.  The city also has a strong economy and a good infrastructure.  The city is visited by thousands every year too, because it is quite pretty and calm, it is quiet and pleasant, and the residents have done a lot to beautify the buildings and retain the historic landmarks too.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Filters into Loma Linda

Sadly, as is the case for many small cities and peaceful suburban towns in California and across the nation, drug and alcohol abuse is becoming ever more increasingly popular in Loma Linda.  Even in a city like this that abstains so much from guilty pleasures, this has not kept out the drug dealers from bigger cities that came here looking to addict the youth population of the city.  To a certain extent, they have been quite successful.  Loma Linda is not the only city in the state that has been affected in this way, not by a long shot.  It has not been singled out or anything, though substance abuse here certainly is a big deal and a big problem.  More realistically is the fact that drug and alcohol abuse and addiction is simply growing more common and popular all across the nation.  For example:

• Binge drinking, (defined as drinking excessively to the point of sickness and then not drinking at all for a short period of time), is much more common in the states than perhaps it was ever been before.  It’s certainly underreported to say the least.  For example, in 2013 more than twenty-five percent of individuals in the United States over the age of eighteen reported that they engaged in abusive, addictive, or binge drinking in the past year, and almost ten percent reported that drank heavily and abusively in the past month alone.  The problem truly has worsened in the last few years.

• Alcohol abuse is exceedingly extensive in the nation too.  The costs come out of the taxpayers’ wallets too usually, which makes it even worse as we all suffer due to the actions of a few.  In the year of 2006 for example, alcohol misuse problems cost the United States $223.5 billion dollars.

• Cocaine abuse has caused some of the worst by far legal situations and legal costs in the United States yet.  This drug is infamous for this.  In just the year of 2007 for example, over five-thousand individuals were found guilty of crack cocaine-related crimes.  These crimes appeared in the form of theft, possession, use, violence, or gang related actions too.

Rehabilitation Sought as a Solution in Loma Linda

Without a doubt, there are many different types of methods for beating drug and alcohol addiction and substance abuse problems. These means and methods have been found to have their basis in  addiction rehabilitation, more specifically with the help of inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment centers, detox facilities, rehab programs, and recovery organizations.  It is these programs by far that are the most successful ones when it comes to helping people beat addiction once and for all.

This is what is needed now more than ever in Loma Linda, and has been needed for some time.  Loma Linda is an almost perfect city, but the drug problem there is pretty serious.  With inpatient rehab, it will only be a short matter of time before the city makes big changes and gets rid of addiction once and for all.
