The City of Lindsay is a pleasant, residential area in Tulare County, in the state of California, in the United States of America. The population was 11,768 at the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau. Lindsay is located southeast of Visalia and north of Porterville and is considered part of the Visalia-Porterville Metropolitan Area and the Porterville Urban Area by the United States Census Bureau.

Lindsay is a pretty poor town, at least by California standards.  The median income for a household in the city was only $24,305, and the median income for a family was $24,934. Males had a median income of $23,645 versus only $18,992 for females. This is technically lower class but not quite poverty class.  The per capita income for the city was $8,230. About 33.3% of families and 39.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 49.3% of those under the age of 18 and 12.3% of those of the age of 65 or over too.  All in all, Lindsay is a nice town, but it’s somewhat poor and that has resulted in a few key, negative consequences.

Lindsay does have some attractions that have started to pull in a little more interest and intrigue.  Some of these are the:

• McDermont Field House
• Lindsay Community Theater which hosts live concerts, plays, etc.
• Lindsay Municipal Golf Course
• World’s Largest Olive

Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Lindsay

Sadly, drug and alcohol addiction and substance abuse has built up to be a very dangerous and damaging issue in Lindsay.  Lindsay is a small, relatively poor town, so it was a perfect target for expanding drug rings in nearby, bigger cities.  These crisis problems and issues really impacted things in Lindsay, a town that already was struggling.

Facts and Statistics

The real grit of the American drug problem is a pretty real one.  Holiday and seasonal substance abuse is statistically speaking a much bigger in poorer and lower class towns and cities than it is in middle class and upper class cities and towns. For example:

• While most drug abuse and addiction problems remain continuous throughout the year and are pretty steady, some addiction problems are exacerbated or triggered by changes in seasons or specific events of some kind or another.  Individuals suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) for example, are at increased risk for developing a substance abuse disorder as a way of coping with the episodes of depression that occur with this condition instead.  Research also indicates that alcoholics tend to drink with some seasonality, again as a way to cope with the depression that accompanies these illnesses.  People with these disorders are almost always lower class income or poverty class income individuals.

• In addition to all of the different types of substance abuse, the holiday season, (between Thanksgiving and New Year’s in the United States), is by far the most dangerous time of year for anyone trying to maintain sobriety from an addiction and for those driving on the highways too.  In fact, it was found that more alcohol-related traffic fatalities are generally speaking reported between Thanksgiving and New Year’s than any other time of year.  In addition to that, by some estimates, Americans can easily expect to witness 1,200 alcohol-related traffic fatalities and 25,000 traffic injuries during the holiday season.  In addition to that, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) reports that 52 percent of motor-vehicle fatalities on Christmas Day and 57 percent of motor-vehicle fatalities on New Year’s Eve/Day are directly attributable to alcohol abuse.

Rehabilitation is the Answer

Substance abuse is just that. It’s an abuse of something that equates to a wrong, unethical, and immoral action. Substance abuse has created a crisis of its own all across the nation and especially in some California areas. A lot of the drug and alcohol problems in this state have spread outwards from major, densely populated areas and urban, metropolitan areas and into the outlying, small town, rural community. Sadly, this is exactly what has been occurring in Lindsay.

Realistically, addiction has not been a huge problem in Lindsay for an extensive period of time. It has however been a problem in the nation as a whole for a long time. For over a decade in fact substance abuse has created crisis after crisis all across the United States. The effect has been a pretty miserable one to say the least.

When substance abuse enters into a small town area like Lindsay, the effect is devastating to say the least. It only takes a couple hundred addicts to make a town of ten to twenty-thousand people suffer greatly. Furthermore, it is thought that Lindsay has what might be the worst drug problem per capita in the nation with over a thousand individuals in and around the city reporting an addiction to drugs and alcohol.

Lindsay now more so than ever needs to be rehabilitated from its drug problem. This is a serious issue to say the least and the continuing problem is just that, a continuing problem. If nothing is done about it then the issue will get much worse long before it gets any better.

The key to resolving addiction in Lindsay lies in getting all who are addicted here into and through inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment centers, detox facilities, rehab programs, and recover organizations. With proper rehab, Lindsay can finally know freedom and resolve from their currently very worrisome and concerning substance abuse issues and problems.  Prevention is workable and should be focused on as well, but rehabilitation is even more important as that will actually, physically remove addiction from the area.
