Lawndale is a lovely and pleasant city in Los Angeles County, in the state of California, in the United States. The population of the city was 32,769 at the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau, up from 31,711 according to the 2000 census. The city is in the South Bay region of the Greater Los Angeles Area and stands as one of the most pleasant and peaceful places to live in the entire South Bay region.
In the mid–20th century, the complex and ever intricate Lawndale area started as a warm-weather paradise with a strong economic base and the attraction of cosmopolitan adventure along with it. The area is huge and that is an understatement. Because of earthquake risk and the increasing importance of the automobile, the city built outward into every nook and cranny of available level land for miles rather than upward. This trend was repeated in every other city in the LA area, so Lawndale is no different from the rest in this regard.
Lawndale does differ a lot though in that it is very pleasant, some-what well to do, and interestingly enough quite affordable for the upper middle class in comparison to other suburban areas in this general area. Lawndale offers a quiet, peaceful, and quite pleasant bedroom community for anyone who would like to live there.
Substance Abuse in Lawndale and in the Nation
Sadly, drug and alcohol abuse and addiction has taken on a whole new level in and around the Lawndale area. This is not the only place that has been affected. In fact, substance abuse has made a big impact all across the nation for some time now. The issue with them has gradually worsened to greater and greater levels all across the United States of America since the turn of the century. Lawndale is one of many cities that has been very adversely affected by this issue.
To get a better idea of just how this issue can be addressed and handled properly, the first thing that must be understood is the true gravity of where the nation currently stands with substance abuse. To shed some light on this:
• A real problem with addiction in the United States today is the thousands of Americans who are affected as a byproduct of addiction. One example of this is the tens of thousands of deaths that occur each and every year at the hands of substance abusers through car accidents, crime, violence, robbery, sexual assault gang violence, etc. This is why it is so important that addiction be stopped, because it is not just the substance abusers themselves who are severely hurt by it, but hundreds of thousands if not millions of other Americans.
• According to the 2009 National Survey on Drug Use and Health’s annual report, (NSDUH), illicit drug use and abuse in the United States has risen to its highest level in eighty years. The NSDUH found that 8.7 percent of Americans aged 12 and older used illicit drugs in the month prior to the survey, a nine percent rise from the 2008 rate in fact. The survey also highlighted to us the increase in prescription drug abuse and methamphetamine and ecstasy use/ Abuse of prescription drugs rose by an alarming 12 percent, and abuse of methamphetamine and ecstasy both rose by ten percent. To add to it, substance abuse rose significantly among Americans between the ages of 50 and 59, and it was this age bracket that saw a doubling in substance abuse from just 2.7 percent in 2002 to a full 6.2 percent in the year of 2009. This jump reflects the entry of the baby boomers, who have a higher frequency of illicit drug use than their older cohorts, into that age bracket too.
