Lakewood, California: The City Itself in Review, in Summary, and Highlighted
Lakewood is a well-known, popular, and frequently visited city in Los Angeles County, in the state of California, in the United States. The population of the city was 80,048 as of the 2010 census. It is bordered by Long Beach on the west and south, Bellflower on the north, Cerritos on the northeast, Cypress on the east, and Hawaiian Gardens on the southeast. The city is essentially surrounded by major business and industry areas, making Lakewood an ideal bedroom community and suburb for much of the larger nearby urban areas.
Major thoroughfares through the city and near to it include Lakewood (SR 19), Bellflower, and Del Amo Boulevards and Carson and South Streets. The San Gabriel River Freeway (I-605) runs through the city’s eastern regions. These main travel routes go even further to make the city ideal for commuting to other urban areas for work and business in general. Sometimes called “an instant city” because of its origins, going from lima bean fields in 1950 to a well-developed city by 1960, Lakewood is a classic example of a post-World War II American suburb and town, and is essentially a very, very successful boom town.
Drug and Alcohol Addiction and Substance Abuse on the Rise in Lakewood, California
Sadly, drug addiction and substance abuse has been on the rise in a very big way in the city of Lakewood. This is a city that is still essentially very, very young and is still trying to develop itself. The city had had little to no experience with drug addiction and substance abuse in the past, and now the issue has only gotten much, much worse. The city was having a hard time dealing with just a little bit of substance abuse just five years ago, and now there has cropped up a veritable epidemic of addiction in the once peaceful and quiet town.
The issue here has been particularly with alcohol, prescription drugs, and cocaine. In particular, the issue has also almost exclusively been with young adults. It is feared that, if something is not done soon to correct it, then the issue will only get much, much, much worse to the point where the city is on the verge of experiencing a full on addiction crisis and epidemic.
Facts and Statistics: Real World Information on What Exactly is Going On in the City of Lakewood
To give some more information on this and to provide the reader with a better understanding as to just what is really occurring in the city of Lakewood, some information has been included below to shed some light on not only the substance abuse problem in Lakewood, but also on those same problems on a nationwide scale:
• Sadly, more than 40 percent of those who start drinking at the age of 15 or younger develop alcohol dependence. Obviously, alcohol use and abuse is a much more serious issue early on in life. Studies show that roughly twenty-five percent of those who start drinking at the age of seventeen or younger develop alcohol dependence and addiction, while a solid ten percent of those who start drinking at the age 21 or older develop alcohol dependence as well.
• Last year, there were approximately 170,000 visits to emergency rooms in the U.S. due to cocaine abuse alone, and many more tens of thousands of such visits thanks to crack cocaine use and abuse and addiction. This is largely thanks to South America, which exports some 1,000 tons of refined cocaine per year to the United States alone.
• Drugs in general are a big killer of American adults. For example, in the 25 and 49 age group in the United States, illicit drug overdose is the fourth leading cause of death, about the same number as in motor vehicle crashes but in fact a little higher than even that number.

It is certainly tough to face life with an addiction. In truth, those who are addicted perhaps have it harder than almost anyone else. Addiction is a trap, a strain, and often a death sentence. For decades Americans have tried and far more often than not failed to beat addiction on one’s own, and now the substances that are being abused are far, far stronger than they ever were before by quite a bit. The key to beating addiction lies in rehabilitation for that addiction, because only rehab offers both chemical addressment and mental counseling too. In Lakewood, more often than not those who are addicted need a much more extensive and detailed recovery process than those outside of Lakewood, partially because the drugs abused in Lakewood, and partially because many who are addicted there are young adults.
One can find freedom from any type of addiction, no matter who they are, no matter what the substance is, how much is taken, how often it is taken, or for how long it has been taken for, quite literally anyone can beat addiction if they put their minds to it. The key is in taking a course through an inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment center, detox facility, rehab program, and recovery organization.
Addiction is insidious because it can be so hard to recognize. People who suffer from chemical dependency often don’t understand the full extent of their problem. Loved ones of people who suffer from addiction might not realize how bad the problem is either a... Read More...
