Hawaiian Gardens is a pleasant, small city in Los Angeles County, in the state of California, in the United States. It is the smallest city in the entire county in fact, and it was incorporated on April 9th of the year of 1964. The population was 14,254 at the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau, down from 14,779 at the previous 2000 census.
As for some history about the city, the town’s very unusual name originated in an iconic 1920s refreshment stand that was decorated with palm fronds and bamboo too. It was the then-rural area’s main landmark for many, many years long before a city was ever built there, and its name stuck as the small town grew up and around it too. Now, as one of seven Los Angeles County cities that actually allows casino gambling, with more than $9.2 million, (65% of the income for the city in fact), of the city’s revenue comes from the Hawaiian Gardens Casino that is within the city limits.
Hawaiian Gardens is a pretty poor town for those who actually live there when it comes to the economy and the income for the families who live there. The median income for a household in the city was only about $34,500, and the median income for a family was just $31,840. Males had a median income of $21,074 versus only $20,643 for females. The per capita income for the city was about $10,728. About 19.8% of families and 22.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.4% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those ages 65 or over. The truth is, this city is quite poor. Many of the people who live there work at the casino, and this is not very high pay either.
Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Hawaiian Gardens
Drug and alcohol addiction and substance abuse in general has been a pretty huge problem in Hawaiian Gardens and for some time now. This is an area that has been worsening time and time again and year after year as the years have gone by. A lot of public opinion in the city is that the existence of the casino has been the main reason why there is so much substance abuse in this area. Sure enough, a lot of the alcohol abuse can be traced back to the casino, and a lot of people who have been caught using or abusing drugs have been traced back to either gambling at the casino or working there.
