About the City of Goleta, California
Goleta is a unique and pleasant city in southern Santa Barbara County, in the state of California, in the United States of America. It was incorporated as a city in the year of 2002, after a long period as the largest unincorporated, populated area in the entire county. As of the 2000 census, the Census-designated place (CDP) had a total population of 55,204; however, a significant portion of the census territory of 2000 did not incorporate into the new city. The population was 29,888 at the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau.
Goleta is known state-wide for being near the University of California, Santa Barbara campus, although the CDP of Isla Vista is closer to the campus. Still though, many who live in Goleta either work or attend school at the university.
In addition to having high educational attainment due to its proximity to the University of California, Goleta also has a strong economic base. The University of California Santa Barbara is the major center of economic activity in the area, both directly and through the numerous associated service industry activities which exist for the staff and students too. All in all, this is a pleasant city to live, to work, to attend school, or even just to visit.
Substance Abuse Comes Up and Hits Hard in Goleta
Sadly, drug and alcohol abuse and addiction has really begun to make a name for itself in and around the once peaceful and prosperous city of Goleta. This is a city that never really had to struggle much with drug and alcohol abuse until more recent years. Now, the city is stuck in the thralls of addiction which to a large degree seem quite inescapable.
This is the sad truth of the matter and it has been so since the turn of the century. If something is not done soon to correct this, especially when it comes to young adult and college student drug and alcohol abuse, then these issues will only get way, way, way worse. More deaths will occur, more crimes will be committed, and more unnecessary suffering will be endured. Better to just handle and eradicate it well before it gets too out of hand.

By 2004, the number of methamphetamine treatment admissions increased to greater than 150,000, representing 8 percent of all admissions.
• According to the 2005 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 10.4 million people age 12 or older (4.3 percent of the population) have tried methamphetamine at some time in their lives. Approximately 1.3 million reported past-year methamphetamine use, and 512,000 reported current (past-month) use. Moreover, the 2005 Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey reported 4.5 percent of high school seniors had used methamphetamine within their lifetimes.
