Concord is the largest city in Contra Costa County, California.  As of the 2010 census, as reported by the United States Census Bureau, the city had a population of 122,067 making it the 8th largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Founded in the year 1869 as the community of Todos Santos by Salvio Pacheco, the name was changed to Concord within months.  The city is a major regional suburban East Bay center within the San Francisco Bay Area and is 29 miles east of San Francisco.

Concord has served most often and primarily a bedroom community for San Francisco and Oakland over the last forty years, but during the last decades, jobs within the city have increased.  Round Table Pizza is headquartered in Concord, and corporations with strong Bay Area regional ties, (such as Chevron and Bank of America), have established extensive back-office operations there, diversifying the local economy.  Concord also has a strong retail sector including the Sunvalley Mall, which used to be one of the 50 largest malls in the USA, auto dealerships, Costco, and Fry’s Electronics.  Prior to its dissolution, Atrivo was headquartered in Concord.

Concord is known for being the home of the annual Concord Jazz Festival and was the home of the Concord Records jazz record label until it was bought in 1999.  Jazz musician Dave Brubeck was born in Concord and in 2006 a park adjacent to Concord High School on Concord Boulevard was renamed in his honor.  Concord is also home to the 17-time World Champion Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps alike.  The corps is made up of talented musicians from around the world.  The Concord Blue Devils are the most decorated drum and bugle corps in the history of Drum Corps International.  The Public-access television channel is operated through TelVue Virtual Television Networks.  The headquarters of the Kabul Soccer Club is also located in Concord.

Drug Abuse and Addiction: Quite a Severe Issue on the Rise in a Once Drug-Free City

Just as is the case in many other cities across California and all across the nation for that matter, drug abuse and addiction have been on the rise in Concord quite significantly in the last several years.  Amongst young adults, teens, adults, and even senior citizens alike, drug abuse and alcohol abuse alike have become far more serious than they ever have before.  The situation has taken the city by surprise quite a bit and little has been done to correct it because the city has never had an issue like this before.  It is feared amongst the residents, though, that if something isn’t done soon about it the city may indeed be faced with a major addiction epidemic.

Facts, Stats, and Real World Data: What is Really Occurring in the City and in the State

• To better understand not only what is occurring in Concord, but also what is occurring in all of California and all across the nation, some basic information pertinent to Concord’s most serious addiction issue, marijuana abuse, and addiction, has been included below:

• According to a 2009 national survey, done by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, more than 104 million Americans over the age of 12 had tried marijuana at least once, and almost 17 million had used the drug in the month before the survey.

• The use of marijuana usually peaks in the late teens and early twenties and then declines in later years. Therefore, marijuana use among young people remains a natural concern for parents and the focus of continuing research, particularly regarding its impact and tendency to bring about further drug abuse of far more dangerous and lethal drug substances and chemicals.

• The potency of marijuana has been increasing steadily, making it more addictive.  In 2009 for example, THC concentrations in marijuana averaged close to 10 percent, compared to around 4 percent in the 1980s.

• In the year 2008, marijuana was reported in over 374,000 emergency department visits in the U.S., with a full 13 percent involving people between the ages of just 12 and 17.

• Long-term studies of high school students’ patterns of drug use show that most young people who use other drugs have tried marijuana, alcohol, or tobacco first, making marijuana the biggest gateway drug in the nation.

• The World Health Organization ranks the United States first among 17 European and North American countries for prevalence of marijuana use amongst its residents.

• More users of marijuana start every day in the U.S.  In 2008 for example, an estimated 2.2 million Americans used marijuana for the first time; greater than half of first-time users were under age 18.

Rehabilitation: Bringing Addicted Individuals Back to a State of Sobriety and Cleanliness

The best way to fight against and win against addiction is in a course through an inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and rehabilitation treatment program, recovery organization, detoxification facility, a rehab center.  Even with marijuana addiction, inpatient rehabilitation is often necessary considering how strong and potent marijuana is now.

For the addicted residents of Concord, especially the addicted young adults of the city, it is very unlikely that a full recovery will be able to be achieved without the help of an inpatient rehab center.  Recovery is available, and inpatient rehab acts as the helping hand to pull one out of the morass that is drug and alcohol addiction.
