Carpinteria is a small and very pleasant oceanside city located in southeastern Santa Barbara County, in the state of California, east of Santa Barbara and northwest of Ventura. The population was 13,040 at the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau.
Carpinteria Beach is a famous beach. This area is known for its gentle slope and calm waves in selected sandy areas but also good surfing swells in some of the more rocky areas too. The area is also known for its sea wildlife. Seals and sea lions can be seen in the area December through May at the infamous rookery in the nearby Carpinteria Bluffs, as well as an occasional gray whale too. To add to that, tide pools contain starfish, sea anemones, crabs, snails, octopuses and sea urchins just to name a few. A marathon-length round trip north of the rookery along the beach to Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara is possible, though passable only during low tide due to water levels.
A popular campground is located adjacent to the beach too. There is bird watching at Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve as well, established in the year of 1977 and administered by the Natural Reserve System of the University of California and by local contributions and volunteering. The Waldholme Torrey Pine, largest known Torrey pine tree on earth, is located in downtown Carpinteria too. All of these combined make this city famous in the tourism industry and that alone makes up a majority of this city’s revenue.
Since the year of 1987, the California Avocado Festival has been held in Carpinteria on the first weekend of October, and this too has attracted much of the city’s tourism. The Santa Barbara Polo Club, one of the main equestrian polo fields in the entire country, is located in Carpinteria. The city is also home to infamous Hollandia Produce, an organic produce company with 70 employees. To add to that, lynda.com, an online software training company ranked as one of the fastest-growing private companies in the U.S., (according to Inc. magazine’s 2010 500|5000 company listing), had its headquarters in the city of Carpinteria. The company was purchased by LinkedIn in 2015 for no less than $1.5 billion.
Addressing Addiction in Carpinteria
It is well understood that drug and alcohol addiction and that substance abuse in general as a habit has grown and developed into a serious issue today. What a lot of people don’t know or don’t understand is just how serious, deadly, and threading this crisis really is. The Centers for Disease Control for Disease and Prevention (CDC) even went as far as proclaiming addiction as being a full on epidemic in the nation today. Not only has a drug problem or an addiction problem never in the history of the nation earned the title of being an epidemic, but never before has substance abuse been such a threat to our overall health as a nation.
Carpinteria, though not a particularly large town, has felt the effects of these issues just as badly as any other city has. The size of the city now more than ever really doesn’t make a difference any more than anything else does, because now addiction is being spread into small towns, big cities, rural areas, and major metropolitan areas alike. There is really no discretion here. One way or the other addiction is going to be a problem and it is something that we will have to face down and address as an issue of national concern soon enough.
But for Carpinteria, how does one talk to an addict in this city and in this city alone? That is the real question here indeed. When someone is aware of a drug or alcohol addiction being present in a person, the next logical step of course is to figure out what to do about it. But the problem is that ninety percent of all persons who are addicted to drugs and alcohol are actually not at all willing in the slightest to seek out help for such addiction problems. In fact, most addicts are totally unwilling to even discuss the prospect of rehab. This is why, if you see or know an addict in Carpinteria, you need to know how to confront them.
Talk to your loved one when he or she is sober, not drunk or high. It may seem as if the person is always inebriated or high, but there has to be an occasional time when your loved one is sober and that is the time to talk to him or her. Never do it when they are under the influence. Many addicts are at their most clear-headed first thing in the morning for example, so that is usually a good time to catch them. Catch him when he first wakes up and before he gets that first hit of the day and confront him then.
Obviously, the ultimate goal here is to get the addict into and through an inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment center, detox facility, rehab program, and recovery organization. This is key and this really is needed more so than anything else. With proper rehab, any battle can be fought and one, and now more than ever this needs to be focused on in Carpinteria.
