About the City of Carlsbad, California and its History

Carlsbad is a very well-known and popular affluent seaside resort city that occupies a beautiful seven mile stretch of Pacific coastline in northern San Diego County, in the state of California, in the United States.  The city rests just eighty-seven miles south of Los Angeles and only thirty-five miles north of downtown San Diego and is part of the San Diego-Carlsbad, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area too.  Referred to and known far and wide as “The Village by the Sea” by locals and tourists alike, the city is a major, major tourist destination.  The city’s estimated 2014 population came in at 112,299.

As for its history, the first European land exploration of Alta California, the Spanish Portolà expedition of 1769, met native villagers while camped on Buena Vista Creek near what would later be Carlsbad.  During the Mexican period, in 1842, the southern portion of Carlsbad, was granted as Rancho Agua Hedionda to Juan María Marrón.  The area was settled very quickly as more and more residents and colonists were attracted to the verdant valleys, fresh streams and rivers, and ideal farming climate.

Today, Carlsbad is now a major, major center for tourism.  The city has some industries of its own, but the majority of the city’s economy rests on the shoulders of the tourism industry.  Without a doubt, this has done very well for the city as the city has done nothing but grow, flourish, and prosper year after year after year.  Now the city is ranked as one of the nicest cities in all of California, and it by far has the most tourism trade for a city of under 150,000 residents.  Much of this growth has occurred recently too, as the city has veritably bounced back from difficulties with the economy in 2007 and 2008.
