Calabasas is a lovely and independent city in Los Angeles County, in the state California located in the hills west of the beautiful San Fernando Valley and in the northwest Santa Monica Mountains between Woodland Hills, Agoura Hills, West Hills, Hidden Hills, and Malibu, California. It is quite out of the way from the major, big cities and many people really like that about it. As of the 2010 census, as reported by the United States Census Bureau, the city’s population was 23,058, up from 20,033 at the earlier 2000 census.
As for its history, the city was only just formally incorporated in 1991, but the community has been around there for much longer than that. Calabasas is often noted for its wealthy residents and gated neighborhoods. It is an ideal city for the wealthy because, though it is still only a short drive from Los Angeles, it is still tucked away into the mountains and is quite private and removed.
The infamous and state-recognized Leonis Adobe, an adobe structure in Old Town Calabasas, dates from 1844 and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the greater Los Angeles area. Tourists come to see this building, as it is still in great shape in spite of its age.
As for the town itself, it is generally accepted that the name of Calabasas is derived from the Spanish calabaza meaning “pumpkin”, “squash”, or “gourd.” In honor of its namesake, in fact, the City of Calabasas and the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce hold for residents and visitors an annual Pumpkin Festival in October, including things like carnival games, exhibits, demonstrations, and live entertainment too. The festival has evolved from a small-town fair to a significant annual event that is known all across the state.
Though Calabasas is more of a residential city, it does have a strong and imposing economy. DTS, Harbor Freight Tools, The Cheesecake Factory, and Ixia are also based in Calabasas. Furthermore, during the dot-com bubble, a number of impressive and successful technology companies were located on a stretch of Agoura Rd parallel to the US 101 Freeway, leading that area of Calabasas to develop a reputation as what would later be called, “101 Technology Corridor”. These businesses included several computer-networking companies like Xylan (later Alcatel-Lucent), Netcom Systems (later Spirent Communications), Ixia Communications, J2 Global Communications, and Tekelec, as well as video-game publisher THQ, and software company Digital Insight. The area has changed since then to some degree, and although some of these companies have since relocated, to different areas, been acquired, or ceased their operations, the area now continues to be home to a significant technology and telecommunications presence.
Drug and Alcohol Abuse
Unfortunately, it is cities like Calabasas that are now being targeted the most and affected the most by drug and alcohol addiction problems. The wealthier cities and the more upper-middle class cities outside of the big city have attracted the most attention by far from drug trafficking groups within the bigger cities.
Essentially what has happened here is that the economic recession of 2007-2010 left a lot of people who would normally abuse drugs in LA totally broke and unable to purchase anything. Drug dealers then started to set their sights on cities like Calabasas, cities that tended to have more affluent individuals. Now, drug abuse and alcohol abuse has moved into cities like Calabasas and begun to wreak havoc there.
For Calabasas, the biggest problems have been with prescription drugs. For a look at the statistics that follow these drugs:
• The sale of painkillers has increased by no less than 300% since 1999.
• Tens of millions of Americans use prescription medications non-medically every single year.
• Almost about 3 out of 4 prescription overdoses are caused by painkillers. In the year 2009, 1 in 3 prescription painkiller overdoses was caused by methadone.
• Overdoses caused by painkillers are more common than heroin and cocaine overdoses combined in fact.
• Over half of the people abusing prescribed drugs got them from a friend or relative or associate. Over 17% were prescribed the medication by a doctor.
Rehabilitation Sought as a Solution
Luckily, the people of Calabasas have a solution to their problems, and that solution has appeared to them in the form of inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment centers, detox facilities, rehab programs, and recovery organizations. With proper rehab, anyone who is addicted to anything no matter how severe it is can find success and reprieve and recovery from their addiction habit.
1. Rehab helps in two major ways. The first is detoxification. With detoxification, someone who is addicted to drugs and alcohol can finally go through a detox program and be released from the effects of chemical dependence once and for all. They can actually experience life addiction-free.
2. The next way it helps is with the actual rehab program itself. The actual rehab program is designed to really assist individuals and in a big way too. Rehab itself offers a very successful approach to winning against an addiction crisis from a mental and from a psychological standpoint. With proper rehab, one can go free from the mental and psychological constraints of addiction.
This is truly what is needed and wanted in Calabasas. With proper rehab, the city will be back on its feet and back on its way to being a powerhouse city in no time.
