Benicia is a desired and pleasant waterside city in Solano County, in the state of California, in the United States of America. It served for a brief time as the state capital for nearly thirteen months from 1853 to 1854. The population was 26,997 at the 2010 census as reported by the United States Census Bureau. The city is located in the San Francisco Bay Area along the north bank of the Carquinez Strait. Benicia is actually just east of Vallejo and across the strait from Martinez. Elizabeth Patterson has served as Mayor of Benicia since 2007.

As for its history, the City of Benicia was founded on May 19, 1847, by a man named Dr. Robert Semple, Thomas O. Larkin, and Comandante General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, on land sold to them by General Vallejo in December of 1846. It was named for the General’s wife, Francisca Benicia Carillo de Vallejo.

Benicia has a pretty good economy and high employment rates.  The median income for a household in the city was most recently estimated $67,617, and the median income for a family was $77,974.  Males had a median income of $59,628 versus $39,893 for female residents. The per capita income for the city was about $31,226. About 3.1% of families and 4.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.4% of those under age 18 and 2.9% of those ages 65 or over.  All in all, these are pretty small numbers for a California city.

Drug and alcohol Addiction and Dependence on the Rise in Benicia

Sadly, drug and alcohol addiction and substance abuse in general has made a pretty significant impact on the local residents of Benicia.  This is a city that, until recently, had almost nothing to do with drug and alcohol addiction.  Now addiction has made its appearance in Benicia and it looks like it might be here to stay.  Hopefully this is not the case though.

Since the turn of the century a lot of small towns in California have fallen prey to drug and alcohol addiction.  If this keeps up, it is likely that the city will become the new addiction capital of the nation.  Something has to be done before every single California city, big and small alike, suffers with significant addiction problems.

Facts and Statistics on the Addiction Problem in and Around Benicia

To get some better ideas on just how severe drug and alcohol addiction is not only in Benicia but also across the entire nation, some facts have been included below on it, particularly when it comes to cocaine abuse and addiction:

• Cocaine trafficking is a major issue all across the planet, but the United States is easily affected the most by this. Cocaine was the number one drug for several decades in the second half of the twentieth century, and now it is making a comeback too even though it had fallen out of popularity for a brief time.  The most recent statistics on this actually show to us that the total international seizures of cocaine drug substances have continued to increase and now total a little over 756 metric tons annually.  That’s a huge amount of cocaine, with the overall worth high into the billions of dollars.  The vast majority of these tons were intercepted on their way to the United States too.

• Cocaine is a big deal in this area, across the nation, and overseas.  Cocaine is a serious issue in Europe as well as the United States too.  It is the second most commonly abused drug in Europe.  Among young people in the age range of 15 to 34 years old in fact, an estimated 7.5 million have used cocaine at least once in their lifetimes, a full 3.5 million have used it in the last year and a massive 1.5 million have taken cocaine in just the past month.  The problem with cocaine in the States is even worse than that.

Rehabilitation for Addiction in Benicia

When it comes to problems in and around Benicia, drug and alcohol abuse and addiction has been the biggest of them all by far and for some time now.  Really since the turn of the century, drug and alcohol addiction and the whole general matter of substance abuse began to hit hard and not let up.  How did this happen though?  Read on.

Benicia for the most part though it has some interesting aspects of its own, tends to act mostly as a bedroom community, a supporting town, a suburb, and an outlying community more so than anything else.  Basically it is there because there are other big cities relatively nearby.  To put things simply, Benicia has been unfortunate enough in recent years to inherit, if you will, a large degree of the drug problems in these bigger cities and areas.

After the economic crisis of 2007, 2008, and 2009 hit, a lot of drug users in bigger cities could no longer afford drugs as they had lost their jobs or their homes or had simply fallen on hard times in general.  Rather than pursuing other avenues of income, the drug dealers, traffickers, and pushers of these cities and towns instead began to set their eyes on middle class and upper middle class suburbs and supporting towns like Benicia that still had some money.  Since cities like Benicia and Benicia itself until then never really had drug problems of any kind, the issues here really did go from okay to bad to worse in the matter of just two or three years.

Now drug addiction and substance abuse in general has made a big name for itself and has caused serious problems in Benicia.  This issue needs to be resolved before it gets any worse too.  The answer to beating drug addiction here lies in getting all those who are addicted into and through inpatient, residential, drug and alcohol addiction and dependence treatment centers, detox facilities, rehab programs, and recovery organizations.

With proper rehabilitation efforts, quite literally anyone who is addicted to anything can beat addiction once and for all.  With rehabilitation, a substance crisis can be eliminated, not only in a single person but in a whole city if everyone who is addicted gets through such rehabilitation centers.  This is the type of process that needs to be applied to Benicia and it needs to be applied as soon as is possible too.
