About the City of Antioch, California

The City of Antioch, (formerly coming under many different names such as: East Antioch, Smith’s Landing, and Marsh’s Landing respectively), is a city in Contra Costa County, California, in the United States.  Located simply and ideally in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area along the San Joaquin-Sacramento River Delta, it is a major and important suburb of San Francisco and Oakland both.  The city’s population was at 102,372 at the 2010 census and was then estimated to be 108,930 in the year 2014.

Antioch, though it mainly acts as a supporting town and suburb to nearby bigger and busier cities, has earned some fame and recognition for itself in the past.  For example, during the mid-1950s the Fibreboard Research patented a method of applying wax coatings to cardboard containers that spawned the first ever in history milk, juice, and ice cream containers henceforth making Antioch, “the home of the milk carton”.

In today’s day and age, Antioch is mainly an important and necessary, “bedroom”, community, with most adults working in larger cities toward the Oakland and San Francisco areas.  The town has seen an enormous amount of growth in the last 30 years that has blown other bedroom communities away.  Typically, as the population of the Bay Area continues to grow the real estate prices in those areas have forced families to move towards the outskirts of the Bay Area.

Drug Addiction and Substance Abuse on the Rise on a Major Level in the City of Antioch

In recent years, much of the drug trafficking and dealing that was occurring in bigger cities like Oakland and San Francisco has slowly begun to expand and move out of these major urban areas and into the surrounding, outlying suburbs, bedroom communities, supporting towns, and neighboring cities and residential areas.  This has been the case for the unfortunate city of Antioch.

Much of the drug addiction and substance abuse issue that has come up in the city of Antioch has had something to do with prescription drug addiction and abuse.  Since this is a major issue in San Fran and in Oakland, it comes as no surprise that the issue would spread.  Also, as drug dealers and traffickers began to run out of new clients in the bigger cities, it was to be expected that such individuals would go to other places to seek out new clientele for their corrupt and cruel business practices.

Facts and Statistics on Prescription Drug Abuse

Being that this is the biggest issue with drug addiction in Antioch, some information has been included below about prescription drug abuse is general:

• Unfortunately, only about ten percent of the population of those who are addicted in the United States actually receives treatment for their addiction every single year.

• About 30% of people in substance-abuse treatment facilities are under the age of 25, making the age group of 12 to25-year-oldd Americans the biggest age group for drug and alcohol abuse.

• Perhaps the most gruesome statistic of all is that, sadly enough, more Americans are becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol every year than are becoming rehabilitated from them.  Truly, this is saddening, it is major, it is serious, and something must be done about it.
