Adelanto is a lovely and pleasant city in the infamous San Bernardino County, in the state of California, in the United States of America, just about 9 miles northwest of Victorville in the High Desert portion of the Inland Empire of the Greater Los Angeles Area.  The name Adelanto means progress or advance in Spanish, and was first given to the post office that was established on the site as far back as the year of 1917.  The population was 31,765 at the 2010 census, up significantly from 18,130 at the 2000 census.  Without a doubt, Adelanto is one of the fastest growing cities in the state and even one of the fastest growing in the nation per capita.

Substance Abuse Hits Hard on the city of Adelanto

As result of poor judgment made on the part of California drug prevention organizations, substances have been able to find their way into the state a lot more easily than they ever were able to do so before, and the result has been a lot more substance abuse and addiction spreading into different California cities like Adelanto.

This is a city that has not reality struggled with substance abuse that much, but that does not mean that something shouldn’t be done about the problem at all.  In fact, quite the opposite is true.  Something must be done if anything is expected to improve in and around this area.

Facts and Statistics Detailing Substance Abuse Problems in and Around the Adelanto Area and the Nation

To provide the reader with more breadth and depth as to just how deep the substance abuse problem in this nation runs some facts and statistics have been included on it below.  These are specifically pertaining to underage drinking which is easily the biggest problem in Adelanto:

• Even more concerning than most statistics on abuse in the United States is the fact that underage drinkers tend to cluster their drinking into intense episodes and not more drawn out or controlled instances.  The Monitoring the Future Survey, (MTF), findings show and indicate that 11% of 8th graders, 22% of 10th graders, and 29% of 12th graders had engaged in some degree of binge drinking within two weeks of the survey being done.  Binge drinking, which is defined as five or more drinks for men and four or more drinks for women within a two-hour period, can be extremely dangerous, particularly for inexperienced drinkers aren’t used to abusing this substance.

• Underage drinking and alcohol abuse in general is also linked to a greater risk of developing future alcohol problems of one kind or another.  In fact, according to the NIAAA’s 2001-2002 National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, (NESARC), those who begin drinking in their early teens at first had a much, much higher risk of developing alcohol dependence sometime in their lives.  Furthermore, this dependence often develops much more quickly and at younger ages than those who did not drink in their early teens at all.  Additionally, high school students who use alcohol or other drugs are statistically speaking five times as likely to drop out of school or believe good grades are unimportant than those students who do not use drugs and alcohol of any kind at all.

The intensity of this problem is no different in Adelanto. In a lot of ways it’s even worse. True enough, Adelanto has experienced more exposure to substance abuse, drug addiction, and alcohol addiction than other cities of similar size and stature. The result has been saddening to say the least as Adelanto never really suffered from substance abuse prior to the turn of the century.

In light of these problems, the real question has now been what to do about them.
